U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. BAER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FAN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 509,835, dated November 28, 1893. Application filed July 13,1893- Serial No. 430,360- (NO model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. BAER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Brook-' lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented i new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in fans and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which- Figure l is a face elevation of the fan opened and sectioned along a; 00 Fig. 3. Fig.2 is a section similar to Fig. 1 the fan being closed. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a view of the. edge opposite to that exposed in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section along y y Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section along z .2 Fig. 2.
In the drawings the letter A indicatesa Web which is adapted to fold or close into a box having three sides B B C fixedly closed so as to house the web when folded into the box. One fold of the web is glued or secured to the side 0 and to another fold of the web is glued or secured a box closing arm or stiffener D of wood, sheet metal or other suitable material. When the web is open as in Fig. l the arm D is held by a spring hook or catch E to keep the web open. When the web is folded into the box as in Fig. 2 the arm D forms a cover for the openside of the box so that the web is securely housed or inclosed, the arm D being he d closed by a spring hook or catch F. A pivot or pin G extends through the box and Web said pivot being shown symmetrically placed by being passed through the box cen- To the lower portion or stem H of the box are connected the ends I of a metallic loop K, said ends I forming pivots on which the loop K can be swung to an open position as in Fig. lto form a handle, the loop K being held in this position by a catch or look suitably formed as by grooves L in the stem K into which grooves the portion of the loop nearthe ends I can spring or snap so as to lock the handle or loop K in the position shown in Fig.1. When the handle K is turned or swung with sufficient force it will clear the grooves Land when the web is closed and the handle or loop K swung over the box as in Fig. 2 said loop will serve to keep the Web Afolded or closed. The loop or handle K is readily looped or bent from wire or suitable spring metal and is given a tendency to cause its ends I to contract or approach one another so that said handle can properly snap or look into the grooves L.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l, The combination with a box having a shank H, and a web adapted to fold into the box, of a folding handle pivoted to the shank of the box, and a catch for locking the handle to the box when the handle isin its folded position, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a box having a shank and provided along its sides with longitudinal grooves, and a web adapted to fold into the box, of afolding loop-shaped handle pivoted to the shank of the box and adapted to engage the grooves in the sides of the box when in its folded position, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a box of a web made to fold or swing into the box, a handle made to swing on the box, and a catch forlocking the handle, said handle being looped so as to lie about the box when closed for holding the web in the box substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL H. BAER.
