ATTHNEY.
UNITED f STATES `PATENT miren.
GEORGE B. BEIDERHASE, OF NFV YORK, N. Y.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,873, dated January 25, 189B.
Application filed December 16, 1896. Serial No. 615,881. (No model) To (all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. BEIDER- HAsE,a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain structions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in theclaiin.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved brush folded and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the brush opened. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the brush closed, and Fig. i is a similar view of the brush opened.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the back of the brush, to the edges of which are hinged the sections B C, forming auxiliary backs, the latter being so secured to the back proper, A, by the hinges a that they will fold under said back A and against each other, as shown in Figs. l and 3, and swing out from each other when opened, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
To the auxiliary backs B and C are secured the bristles D, preferably arranged to flare outwardly in order to present as much brushi 11g-surface as possible.
To one end of the-.auxiliary bacleB is secured the catch E, preferably hinged at its center, as shown at e, the free end thereof being bent and adapted to extend around the extreme end of the back O and it in the recess o, formed therein, the catch thereby holding the brush in its folded adjustment.
lf desired, the back A may be painted, covered with silver, or otherwise decorated, thereby giving to the article a neat and attractive appearance.
TWhen desired to use the brush, it is folded, as shown in Figs. l and 3, and when not in use is opened, as in Figs. 2 and 4, and inserted, if desired,in a suitable leather case, (not shown,) in which latter position or adjustment it may be conveniently carried in the pocket.
I am aware that brushes have been constructed with hinged sectional backs and therefore I make no claim to such; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
A brush constructed with a back proper, auX- iliarjT backs provided with bristles, hinged to the edges thereof, and a catch secured to one end of the auxiliary back, and adapted to lock the brush in its folded adjustment, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 30th day' of November, A. D. 1896.
