D. JENNINGS.
DOOR CHECK.
No. 312,859. Patented Feb. 24,1885.
WITNESSES INVE'NTOR UNITED STATES FFICEO PATE T DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,859, dated February 2 1885.
Application filed September 13, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, DANIEL JENNINes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centreburg, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a sideview of my device, with one-half of the same removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one-half of the stop, and Fig. 3 is a detailview of catch N.
This invention has relation to door stops and holders; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended .claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the door-stop, which is made of metal, and is formed with a base flange, B, havingperforations 0, through which the fastening-screws pass, whereby the stop is secured to the floor. The front or outer edge, (I, of the stop is vertical. In the upper portion of the stop is made a recess, 6, having a vertical downward extension, 9, an opening, 71., at the top of the stop, and an opening, it, in the front thereof. Pivot bearings l are provided in the rear portion of the recess 6 to receive the journals at the inner end of the hook-arm N, the outer or hook end, an, of which projects from the opening it, as shown. Under the hook-arm is aspiral spring, 8, which extends downward into the extension or offset 9 of the recess, said offset forming the seat for the spring. Through the opening it at the top of the stop is a key-stud, z, the lower end of which is connected to or bears against the hook-arm N. In the construction illustrated this stud is made independent of the arm, as shown. Its lower end is enlarged a little by a marginalflange, so that it cannot escape from the opening. When pressure is applied on the upper end of this stud, the hook-arm is pressed downward, notwithstanding the action of the spring, which tends to push it upward. The bodyA of the stop is preferably constructed in two parts or sections, which are separated on a vertical plane centrally situated and passing through the recess c. When the hook-arm, spring, and stud are in position, the sections V V are secured together by a screw, as at w.
0 represents a catch-plate, which is formed with a lip, Z, in rear of which is a recess, 10. This plate is secured to the side of the door, near its lower end and outer edge, so that it comes in contact with the hook-arm m, its lip Z engaging the hook end of the arm, which thus serves to hold the door open. In order to release the door, it is only necessary to press on the upper end of the studz, aslight pressure with the foot being sufficient. The hook-arm is depressed by this action, and the catch-plate being released the door is free to move. As the lip of the catch-plate isturned downward and the hook of the arm N upward, pressure upon the hook-arm will readily disengage it from the lip of the catch'plate.
I am aware of Patent No. 125,808, in which a shell is provided to receive a lever-catch, the outer end of which is designed to engage a roller j ournaledin a frame secured to the door, the said lever being pivoted at its inner end between the walls of the shell, and provided with avertical extension which passes through an opening in the top of the shell, the said lever being held up by a flat spring pressing against its under longitudinal side, and there-v fore do not claim such devices, broadly.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A door-stop made in two sections separated on a vertical central plane and secured to gether by a screw having a projecting springsupported arm formed with an upwardlyturned hook end, and a depressing-stud, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL JENNINGS.
