SPEGIFIFTCATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 670,854, dated March 26, 1901. Application iilefl September 10, 1900. Serial No. 29,600. KNO model.)
T all whom/t it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. H. DEIBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to a door-fastener adapted for use as a door-bolt or as a check to hold the door partly ajar.
The construction of the improvement will he fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication, and its novel features will be detined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical sectional view of a portion of a door with my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sec.- tional View of the fastener, taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a viewin perspective of the housing of the device, and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the bolt detached.
The reference-numeral l designates the door, formed in its lower edge with a vertical recess 2 to receive a housing 3, formed at its lower end with perforated ears 4. to facilitate the attachment of the housing to the lowerl edge of the door. One side of the housing is formed with a recess or offset 5, within which is arranged a flat spring 6, the upper end of which is secured to the housing, while its free end is adapted to engage the teeth 7 of a holt located within the housing. The upper portion 8 of the holt is square in cross-section, formed with an elongated slot 9, through which extends a rod 10, secured at its inner end to the spring 6. The lower portion 11 of the bolt is reduced to circular form in crosssection and is surrounded by a coiled spring 12, one end of which hears against the lower end of the squared portion 8 of the bolt and the other end against the bottom wall of the housing.
The housing 3 is formed at one side with an elongated slot 13 and an opening 14, which register with similar slots 15 and openings 16 in the door, and a plate 16, secured to the door. The rod l0 extends through the openings 14 and 16, and a treadle 17, projecting from the holt, extends through the slots 13 and 15.
When the device is to he used as a doorcheck, it is provided with a concavo-convex metallic plate 1S, to the under surface of which is secured by a screw 19 a flexible Washer 20.
The utility and operation of the invention will be readily understood. The tendency of the spring 12 is to force the holt upward to the position shown in Fig. 2. To lower the bolt, it is only necessary to apply pressure to the treadle 17 to depress the bolt, the rengagement of the spring (i serving to hold the bolt in its depressed position against the tension of the spring 12.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
A door-fastener, comprising a housing, f1tting a recess in the edge of the door, and having a recess on its inner surface: a spring secured at one end within the recess of the housing: a rod secured to said spring, and extending through the housing and door: a bolt within the housing formed with an elongated slot and with rack-teeth: a treadle projecting from said holt: and aspringsurrounding the lower portion of said bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN F. l-I. DEIBEL.
Vitnesses:
DANIEL SEEMANN, CHAs. SEEMANN.
