SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. PRATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the county of Wayne and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is primarily designed to provide a sash fastener which will be cheap in construction and efficient in operation, the same being applied to the window frame so as not to disfigure the same and which will engage the sash for retaining the same at any predetermined position.
A further object of the present invention is to construct a sash fastener which may be easily and quickly detached from the sash and retained from engagement therewith temporarily while the sash is being manipulated.
To prevent any accidental disengagement of the sash fastener from the window sash, a novel locking device is employed to be engaged by the sash fastener. The sash fastener comprises a single piece of spring material having one of its terminals secured to a block while its free terminal is adapted to project through an opening provided in the block for that purpose and engage a perforated plate carried by the sash, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the combination, arrangement, and construction of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherei11 Figure 1 is a view illustrating the present invention applied to the window frame;

Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

able means, such as screws 1, is the ordinary guide strip 2 which is provided with an elongated opening 3. This strip also has a pair of recesses 4 and 4 formed adj acent to the opening, said recess 4 being inclined upwardly from said slot while the recess 4 is uniform in depth throughout its entire length. The recess or auxiliary seat 4 is parallel with the main seat 4, but is of lesser depth for the purposes hereinafter described.
Secured to the strip 2 by any desirable means, such as a screw 5, is asash fastener 6 comprising a single piece of spring material which is coiled at 7 to produce sufficient resiliency to manipulate the fastener. The fastener or body portion 6 is coiled a second time above the spring coil 7 to form a finger hold 8 from which the free terminal of the fastener projects upwardly above the opening 3 a short distance and is then bent upon itself, as at 9, to form a parallel arm 10 which is adapted to rest on either seat above referred to. The free terminal of the parallel arm or stop 10 is bent to form an engaging terminal 11 which is adapted to protrude through the opening 3 and engage the sash B. The locking pin 12 is mounted in the main recess 4 and projects partially the width of said seat, said pin being adapted to engage the parallel or engaging arm 10 to prevent accidental dislodgment of the terminal 11 from the sash B.
The sash may be provided, if desired, with a metallic perforated plate 13 to prevent any wear on the sash by the engaging terminal 11.
In operating the device of the above described character, the spring fastener is withdrawn from the position illustrated in Fig. l and is given a slight lateral movement whereby the arm 10 is seated in the inclined or auxiliary seat 4 after which the window sash may be freely manipulated. To retain the sash in any predetermined position, the same is raised or lowered to that position, as the case may be, after which the fastener 6 is withdrawn from its seat 4 and is given a reverse lateral movement to cause the former to seat in the main recess or seat 4, whereupon the engaging terminal or hook 11 engages the perforated plate 13 carried by the sash. To prevent accidental dislodgment of the terminal 11, the fastener 6 is sprung into engagement with the locking pin 12, the peculiar shape of the hook permitting or facilitating the above operation.
The projection intermediate the seats 4 and 4 may be reinforced by a headed cap or member 14, which cap or head of the member projects over a portion of the seat 4 to prevent accidental dislodgment of the spring when the latter is in an inoperative position. Furthermore, this head or member 14 prevents undue wear on the projection intermediate the seats.
Having thus fully described my invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a window frame, a main seat formed on said frame, an auxiliary seat of lesser depth associated with said main seat, a sash fastener mounted on said frame and comprising a body, a hook adapted to engage a sash, and a stop adapted to rest on either of said seats, for the purposes herein specified.
2. In combination, a window frame provided with an opening therein, a main seat, an auxiliary seat of lesser depth associated with said main seat, a sash fastener adapted to be mounted on said frame comprising a body, a hook adapted to project through said opening and engage a sash, a stop adapted to rest on either of said seats, and a locking member mounted in said main seat adapted to lock said fastener, all for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In combination, a window frame provided with an opening therein, a main seat, an auxiliary seat of lesser depth associated with said main seat, a sash fastener adapted to be mounted on said frame comprising a body and having a portion bent upon itself and spaced therefrom, a hook formed on said bent portion adapted to engage a sash, and a locking pin carried in said main seat adapted to engage said bent portion as set forth.
