Specification of Letters-Eaten. I
Application filed June-10, 1912. Serial N0. 702,832.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Groncn A. BULL, citi zen or the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Door-Checks, of whlch specification. This invention relates to improvements lIl devices for checking doors anal holding'them open or partly open, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and 1nc'rease the efliciency and 'ntility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be attached to the door without change of structure either in the door or in the device, and whichds adapted to doors of different sizes and weights.
With these and other objects in view, the inventionponsists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the drawings illustrative of the preferred 'embodimentof the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional elevation; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi the drawings by the cated in all the views of same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a shell orcasing having an enlarged lower portion and a reduced upper or bolt-guiding portion 11. The portion 10 of the shell is provided perforations to receive the holding screws or devices 13 whereby the shell is secured to the door, a portion 'of which is represented conventionally at 14. At its lower end the enlarged portion 10 of the shell is provided with a transverse opening in which the bearing roller is disposed, as hereafter explained.
The guiding portion 11 of the shell is provided with spaced lateral ears 15, and formed within the portion 11 of the shell between the cars 15, is an opening which communicates with the interior of the shell.
19,. to closely engage within the enlarged interior of the shell.
The plunger is thus movable vertically within the shell, but is prevented from rotation therein by reason of its square upper portion operating in the square portion of the shell. At its lower end the enlarged portion 19 of the plunger is provided with spaced ears 21 to receive a roller 22 which is mounted for rotation through the ears upon a pin 23. The roller 22 is preferably provided with a rim 24 of rubber or like material. The roller projects through the opening of the enlarged portion 10 of the shell and likewise extends below the shell when in its lower position as shown in Fig. 1.
- Surrounding the stem 18 within the bore of the' enlarged portion 10 of the shell, is a spring 25 which bears upon the upper end of the enlargement 19 at one end and against the shoulder at the juncture of the bores of the shell, and thus exerts its force to mainyieldably in its downward position The portion 18 of the stem is provided with a transverse slot 26 which registers with the slots in the shell that are located between the ears 15. Pivoted upon the pin 16 between the ears 15, is a lever arm 27 whichiextends at one end through the slot 26 and projects at its other end beyond the ears 15' and terminates in a finger grip 28. Pivoted at 29 to the lever 27, is a pawl 30 supported by a' spring 81 and operating to engage the teeth 17 of the ears. By this arrangement it will be obvious that the lever when actuated will correspondin ly actuate the stem or plunger and thus locationof the bearing roller 2224. Thus when the lever 27 is elevated 'at its outer end, the lever will be released and forced downwardly by the action of the spring 25', and engage the band 24 of the roller with the floor, and by the action of the pawl 30, the

By this means the 1 gasp-11m of sum the cheek device rendered operative m: inepcn may be preferred. 7
