- This invention has reference to new and useful improvements in door-checks and is designed to provide a check of the type or character which may be secured either to the interior or exterior of the door adjacent the base thereof. Be it known that I, CHARLIE W. ELLERBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeland, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Door-Stop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to new and useful improvements in door-checks and is designed to provide a check of the type or character which may be secured either to the interior or exterior of the door adjacent the base thereof. Its object is to provide a means whereby the door may be retained in an open position against the action of wind and like elements; and which, when it is released will automatically disengage itself from the floor and permit the closing or opening of the door, thus making it possible to retain the door at any angle.
It further contemplates the construction of a stop of this type and structure that will in no way damage or injure the floor covering against which it is brought to bear.
WVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter fully described, specifically claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a front elevation of my improved stop showing a section of the same broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section partly in elevation taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2..
Reference being had to the drawing, 1 designates in general, the main body portion of my stop comprising a plate having a centrally disposed angularly formed passage 3 in which reciprocates the plunger 4. On each side of this passage 3 is disposed a longitudinally extending flange 2, said flange being pierced at each extremity by the orifice 5 through the medium of which the stop may be secured to the door. A transverse retaining bar 6 is provided at each longitudinal extremity of the passage 8 on the side of the same that is retained adjacent the door.
The rectangularly formed plunger 4: which reciprocates in the passage 8 has formed on its upper surface a series of serrations7 adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed pawl 8 which is journaled on the exterior side of the passage 3 and operates in the orifice 9 formed in the outer wall 10 thereof. The lower face of the upper extremity of this plunger is recessed to form a'chamber wherein the spring 11 is retained, the same being secured at its upper terminal to the end plate of the passage 3', and at its lower terminal to the plunger, said spring being adapted to retain the plunger from operative engagement with the floor. In order to facilitate the operation of the plunger, a button 12 is provided at its upper extremity, while oppositely disposed thereto is carried a transversely disposed floor engaging spring 13, the lower extreme 14 of which is curved to prevent any damage being inflicted upon the same. The side of the passage adjacent this curved portion 14 of the spring has a recess 15 formed therein, in order that the same may be contained entirely within the casing 1 when not in operation.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the operation of this device is as follows :WVhen the door is opened at the required angle a force is applied to the button 12 thus forcing the plunger downward against the tension of the spring 11 and bringing the floor-engaging member 13 into operative engagement with the floor, the pawl when the plunger is in position engaging the adjacent serration 7 and holding the same in the desired position. The only operation necessary to release the plunger in order that the door may be permitted to swing is to apply a pressure on the outer extremity of the pawl 8, thus disengaging the same from the serrations 7 and allowing the spring 11 to operate, drawing the plunger and spring 13 into the casing 1.
It is to be noted that the extremity of the spring 14 is adapted to engage the casing, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. By this construction, when the pawl 8 is out of engagement with the plunger, the plunger being actuated upwardly by the spring 11, the spring 14: serves as a means to limit the upward move ment of the plunger.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a body provided with a door-engaging face; a plunger mounted for reciprocation and against rotation in the body; a flat strip of resilient metal mounted at its upper end upon the lower end of the plunger and disposed substantially at right angles to the 2. A device of the class described coinprising a body; a plunger mounted for recipro-v cation and against rotation in the body; a flat strip of resilient metal mounted at its upper end upon the lower end of the plunger and folded transversely upon itself into zigzag form to constitute a floor-enga ing compression spring, the lower end of the spring being extended laterally beyond the contour of the spring proper, the body being cut away adjacent its lower end to forma recess to engage the extended portion of the spring to limit the upward movement of the lunger and to dispose the lower end of the spring within the contour of the body; resilient means for lifting the plunger; and adjustable, body-carried means for holding the plunger in depressed position.
