UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK KUMBER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,171, dated May 14, 1901. Application filed November 16, 1900. Serial No. 36,696. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRICK KUMBER, a citizen of the United States .of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window-locks, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a window-sash may be locked securely at any desired height.
The herein described invention further aims to construct a device of this character which will be extremely simple, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture furthermore, one that may be highly efficient in its operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window having my improved lock applied thereto in position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the lock. Fig. 3 is a like View of a modified form of lock. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cam applied to the modified form of lock. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the shaft upon which the cam is mounted.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the window-frame, and 2 indicates the window-sash. Upon said sash is secured a plate 2 carrying a casing 3, which are suitably secured together. Through the said casing 3 and plate 2 extends a shaft 4, upon which is eccentrically mounted a cam 5, which is shrunk upon the said shaft or fixed thereto in any suitable manner, said cam carrying an engaging surface 6 and having formed therein on its one face an annular groove 7, in which are placed the seats 8. Upon the shaft 4, to the inner wall of the casing 3 and the cam 5, is arranged a spiral spring 9, which retains said cam normally from disengagement with the side of the window-frame.
flhe end of the shaft t carries a reduced screwthreaded portion 10, upon which is secured a crank-handle 11 by means of the nut 12. A set-screw 14 extends through the casing 3 into the annular groove 7 and engages in one of the seats 8, thus serving as means to securely lock the window when desired.
The operation of myimproved window-lock is as follows: When the window is raised or lowered and it is desired to retain the same at a certain height, the crank-handle is operated, which in turn operates the cam, forcing the latter, with its engaging surface, against the side of the window-frame and serving to retain the window at any desired height. In order to release the window, the operating crank-handle is turned in the opposite direction, as is well known in this class of windowlocks. In order to securely lock the window, the set-screw, as heretofore described, is-operatedin the manner set forth.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved lock will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Having thus fully'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a window-lock, the combination of a casing,'a shaft secured in said casing, a cam eccentrically, mounted on said shaft having formed therein an annular groove and seats arranged in said annular groove, a set-screw arranged in saidcasing adapted to engage the annular groove and seats, a spring encircling said shaft connecting said casing and said cam adapted'to normally retain said cam from disengagement with the side of the windowframe, and a crank removably mounted on the end of said shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
