JACOB C. ROBIE, OF BINGHAMTON, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATCH ES..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,07%, dated November 15, 1864.
T0 C/,ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB C. Ronin, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State otl New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode ot' Locking Door-Knob Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part ofthe specification, and in which- Figure l is a View of the apparatus when attached to the door. Fig. 2 represents the plate lettered A, the spring-slide lettered B, the spring lettered C, and the bolt lettered D.
My invention consists in the construction of a knob-latchbolt, to be attached to the woodwork of the door in such a manner as to bolt the latch when required, so that it cannot be drawn back or moved from its position by means of the knob, thus obviating the necessity of using any other bolt on the door.
I construct my knob-latch bolt of any ofthe known materials used for such purposes. The plate A may be cast or cut from a sheet of metaland enameled. l then attach the springslide B and the spring C with the bolt D, which has a groove near the end, into which the springb is tted, and one end of the bolt passes through the plate, which keeps it in place. The knob 'i on the slide B extends through the plate the distance that the bolt enters the latch-say one-eighth of an inchso that when the slide is moved forward it depresses the spring, and thus causes the bolt to enter the hole or notch in thelatch. When thc slide is moved back, the bolt is withdrawn, and that part of the slide which extends through the plate and acts upon the spring passesinto the recess formed by bending the spring near where it is attached to the plate.
rlhis improvement can be attached to any door on which there is aknob-latch by simply drilling through the wood-work of the door and the shell or case of the latch, and tiling a notch or drilling a hole in the latch. The plate can then be attached to the door with the bolt ready for action.
I elaim- The mode of locking or bolting a door-knob latch by means of the slide and spring connected with a bolt or pin which passes through the wood-work ot' thc door and the shell or case of the door-knob latch into the latch in such a manner that said latch cannot be drawn back or moved from its position by means of the knob when the bolt or pin is pressed into it, as set forth.
