PATENT OEEroE.
WlNDOW-SASH FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,198, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed November 8,1902. Serial No. 130,582. (No model.)
To all ur/w'm/ if Til/Ill] calm/5777,:
Be it known that I, J orrx OAvAx REILLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Post Office. South Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful lmprow'ements in \Vindow- Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists of two main parts namely, a metal socket-piece to be secured to one of the meeting-rails of the window-sash and a metal locking-bolt to be received and held by said socket-piece.
I will now refer to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 shows plan of the window-sash fastener. Fig. 2 shows view of under side of same with the parts in locked position. Fig. 3 shows side view of the fastener; Fig. at, view of the under side of the bolt portion of the fastener, the bolt being shown as drawn backa, in the unlocked position.
A represents the socketpiece, which is formed, preferably, of brass, and the top a of the recess or socket is beveled downwardly, so as to allow the bolt, as hereinafter described, to slide down it and fall into the socket, and said socket-piece is suitably flanged or lugged, 11/, so as to be secured by screws to the sash B. The locking-bolt C, also preferably of brass, passes through hole (Z formed in a metal box D, that is flanged or lugged at its bottom (1, so as to be secured to the sash-rail E opposite to the socket-piece. The head 0 of the bolt (which actually forms the lock is beveled beneath and projects through a hole (Z in the front portion of the box and has a stop (1 at its back to limit its projection. A spiral spring F encircles the bolt within the box. The bolt at its back passes through a circular flange (1, formed on the box and which is internally screw-threaded, and upon the bolt beyond the said flange is set a sleeve (1?, that has an external screw-thread, Fig. et, to engage with the flange aforesaid. The said sleeve is provided with a milled edge for turning it, and it steps against a shoulder a", formed on the bolt, being held in place by a head c", formed at the end of the said bolt.
The box D is preferably provided with arms (F, that extend forwardly and terminate in bent ends that are arranged to clasp an upward flange a, formed on the socket-piece A, when such arms are employed.
The action is as follows: As the inside sash E is brought down the projecting beveled head 0 of the bolt comes in contact with the beveled socket-piece A and (the sleeve G at the opposite end being at this time free) the bolt C will slide back and by the spring action will fall into the socket, so as to lock the sashes together. The sleeve (i may then be screwed into the flange (1*, which will prevent the bolt C being burglariously forced back by a tool. The extending arms (1", when employed, will prevent any tool or instrument from being passed along between the sashes to the bolt-head and will at the same time hold the sashes together, so as to prevent any rattling.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be employed, I declare that what I claim is- A sash-fastener comprising a bolt-carrying member and a bolt-socket member adapted to be secured respectively to the meeting-rails of opposite sashes, a spring-projected bolt mounted in one member, a threaded sleeve mounted to turn in fixed position upon the bolt, the bolt carrying member having a threaded socket adapted to receive said sleeve, and also having hook-arms at each side of the bolt extending over the socket member upon the other sash, and projections upon said socket member adapted to be engaged by said hook-arms to prevent separation of the sash lengthwise the bolt.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN GAVAN REILLY.
