Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application filed November 2, 1918. Serial No. 260,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LYPKA, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Langenburg, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looks, and particularly to types in which a permutative element and key are used in operation.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a particularly simple and novel form of'lock which is not readily operated except by those familiar with it. 1
This, and other like objects are accomplished by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing a portion of a door and jamb, and indicating the application of the lock.

Secured upon the inner side of the door 10 is a rectangular, hollow lock casing 14 in which is slidably mounted a lock bolt 15,
' the same being adapted to extend through at each end of the casing, its outer end being engageable within a keeper 16, secured to the jamb 11 of the door or like fixed part.
Mounted to rotate transversely within the lock casing is a spindle 18, this spindle passing through a bracket 19, having an angularly turned foot 20, secured within the casing by a rivet 21 so as to be rigid therewith.
Mounted on the spindle 18 is a spur gear 23, the teeth of which are in mesh with the teeth of a rack 24, formed upon the edge of the lock bolt 15 so as to transmit rectilinear motion to it when the spindle is rotated. This spindle extends outwardly through the door 10 and has secured upon it a graduated index 25, formed with an operating knob 26 by which the spindle is actuated, the graduations on the disk 25 being registerable with a fixed point 27 on the surface of the door.
Secured upon the inner end of the spindle 18 is a ratchet element 28 having teeth formed upon its side engageable with a similar ratchet element 29, secured to the inner side of the casing 14 in a permanent manner, and disposed oetween the inner side of the bracket 19 and the outer side of the ratchet element 28 is a coiled compression spring 30 adapted to press the teeth of the ratchets into engagement.
Also mounted on the spindle 18 is a ratchet wheel 32, held by key 33 set in the spindle, the teeth of the ratchet wheel being engaged with a detent 34, formed with a spring 35, held within the inner end of the casing 14, by a riviet 36, adjacent to the escutcheon or key hole 38, so that when the barrel of a key is entered therein and the ward comes in contact with the inner side of the spring 35 as to raise the same, removing the detent from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 32, permitting the spindle to be rotated by operating the extending knob 26.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the bolt 15 can be engaged with the keeper 16 by operating the knob 26 through the rack and gear. It is however impossible to retract the bolt, due to the action of the spring detent, until a key has been inserted, raising the detent out of engagement, and due to the ratchets 28 and 29, when it is desired to move the bolt forward, it is necessary to draw the spindle outwardly against the pressure of the spring 30, the ratchet wheel and gear sliding on the key 33 thereby providing a novel type of lock difficult to operate by those unfamiliar with its features.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a casing and a keeper, of a bolt slidable within said casing, rack teeth formed upon one side of said bolt, a spindle mounted to rotate transversely in said casing, a spur gear on said spindle, said gear engaging with the teeth of said rack, a ratchet wheel mounted on said spindle, a spring detent engageable with the teeth of said ratchet, said spring detent being removable by the intrusion and manipulation of a key and a knob on the exterior of said spindle, whereby said bolt may be actuated.
2. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a hollow rectangular oasing and a fixed keeper, of a bolt slidable longitudinally within said casing, rack teeth formed upon one edge of said bolt, a spindle mounted transversely in said casing, said spindle being slidable therein, a fixed bracket in the casing supporting one end of said spindle, a pair of clutch elements preventing the rotation of said spindle in one direction, a spur gear on said spindle the teeth of said gear engaging with the teeth of said rack, a ratchet Wheel mounted on said spindie, means for engaging said ratchet Wheel Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the With said swindle, a spring detent engaging with the teeth of said ratchet, means for removing said detent from contact with the teeth of said ratchet, and means for operating said gear whereby said 100k may be 0perated.
