HENRY F. BENDER, OF GUNNISON, CGLORADO.
SASH-FASTENER.
Application filed July 13, 1915.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BnNDnr., a. citizen of the United States, residing at Gunnison, in the county of Gunnison, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to iinproveniente in sash fasteners, and has for its object to provide a device of this character capable of being easily and quickly attached to the window sash.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash fastener so constructed that the locking action thereof is positive.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which is eX- tremely simple in construction, and one which is capable of locking the sash in closed, or partly closed position.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a window frame and sash, showing the fastener operatively connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. F ig. 3 is a front elevation of the device, the cover plate broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the device.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the side stile of the window sash, and 2 the adjacent side of the window frame, which is provided with a plurality of horizontally disposed sockets 3, the purpose of which will appear later. The stile 1 is provided with a transverse groove il, which is adapted to receive the elongated seat 5, which is semi-circular in cross section and has its side edges terminating in horizontal flanges 6, which are attached to the stile l by spurs 7, said spurs being formed on the flanges by puncturing the saine with a suitable tool. The seat 5 is provided at one end with a semi-annular flange 8, which is adapted to engage one end of the coil spring 9, said coil spring encircling thev bolt 10 between Specification of Letters Patent.

the shoulders 11 and 12. The other end of the spring 9 engages the shoulder 11. A plate 13 is provided and is secured to the stile l in any suitable manner, and serves to cover the seat 5, thereby preventing the bolt 10 from accidentally disengaging said groove. The plate is provided with a fiange 14 which engages one side of the stile 1, and is provided with a perforation 15 for slidably receiving the bolt 10. The outer end of the bolt 10 is provided with an actuating knob 16.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the spring 9 normally holds the bolt 10 engaged in one of the sockets 3 formed in the window frame, thus positively locking the sash. When it is desired to unlock the sash it is only necessary to grasp the knob 16 and withdraw the bolt 10 from engagement with the socket 3, which action compresses the spring 9, so that when it is desired to again lock the sash the spring 9 will expand and force the bolt into engagement with the desired socket.
What is claimed is A window fastener, in combination with the side stile of the sash, said stile having a transverse groove formed therein, a seat engaged in said groove and having flanges carried by its side edges for engagement with the stile, one end of said seat being provided with a semi-annular flange, a plate attached to the stile for closing the groove, said plate having a Harige for engaging the side of the stile, and having a perforation formed therein, a bolt slidable in the seat and perforation, said bolt having annular shoulders disposed in spaced relation, a coil spring encircling that portion of the bolt between the shoulders, and having one end engaged with the semi-annular flange and the other end engaged with one of the shoulders, the other shoulder being adapted to engage the outer surface of the semi-annular flange said spring serving to hold the bolt in yielding engagement with the side of the window frame.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY F. BENDER.
