C. WITZEL.
SASH FASTENER.
lPatented F 2,1886.
WITNESS) @M-3 ATTOR NiTan STATES CHARLES VITZEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
sAsH-FAsTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 335,409. dated February 2I 1886.
Application tiled November 6, 1885. Serial No. 182,024. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES VITZEL, of Brooklyn, in the count-y of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sash Lock and Fastener, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding windowsashes at any desired elevation, and locking them in place either raised or lowered. .l also claim to do away with weights and cords in any ordinary window; also, can be used on heavy sash to lock them at any elevation.
The invention consists in the construction and combination oi' parts and details, as will be fully described, and set forth'hereinaiter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specitication, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view ot' my improved sash lock and fastener in the casing, parts of the casing being broken out and others being in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View through the casing. Fig. 3 isa sectional plan view on the line tv x, Fig. 2.
In the outer surface oi' thejamb-piece A of the window-casingthe plate B is countersunk, and from the inner side ot' the said plate B the two tubular necks (l C project, each facing the edge ot' a sash, D or D. In the said necks the sliding bolts E and E are placed, and are connected with the levers F Ii", projecting through the slots G G in a plate, H, secured on the face ofthe window-casing. The said necks C C have longitudinal slots to permit the ends ot' the levers F F or the connectingpins of the same to pass. The levers F F are pivoted on shackles J, provided on the inner sides of the plate B.
The jamh-piece A is cnt ont behind the plate B to receive the necks OC', which do not project beyond the inner surface ot' the said jamb-piece.
Springs K K, secured on the inner side of the plate B, act on the levers F F in such a manner as to press the bolts E E 'from the outer surface ofthe plate B.
Holes L, for receiving the ends ot the bolts E E', are provided in the end edges oi' the sashes I) and D', and, if desired, apertured strips may be secured on those edges of the sashes provided with the holes, to prevent tearing and mutilating the edges of the holes in the edges ofthe sashes by the bolts.
vVhen a sash is to be lowered, the lever of the bolt holding the sash is moved in such a manner as to remove the end ofthe bolt from the hole in the sash, andwhen the sash is at the desired elevation the lever is released and the bolt snaps into the next hole it reaches, as a spring acts on the lever of each bolt.
rlhe lever F of the bolt for the upper sash must be moved toward the middle ot' the window to withdraw the bolt, and the lever ot the bolt for the lower sash must be moved from the middle ofthe window.
The bolts lock the sashes in all positions, and are so located and constructed that they cannot be picked from the outside. Thesashes can be locked when partly opened at the top and bottom, thus insuring perfect ventilation without any danger from burglars.
My improved sash-lock is adapted very well for use on car-windows.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a plate, of two longitudinally-slotted necks projecting' from the saine, sliding` bolts in the necks, the levers F F', pivoted on the shackles J, pivoted on the said plate and connected with the sliding bolts, and of springs on the said plate and acting on the levers, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a window-casing, of the plate B, countersunk in the jamb-piece, the necks C C on said plate, the sliding bolts E E', the levers F F, the springs K, and the slotted plate H on the i'ace ofthe casing, substantiall y as herein shown and described.
