noon-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part or Letters Patent No. 532,151, dated January 8,1895.
Serial No. 510,319. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, LEVI FUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesburg, in the county of Greene and State of -Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Door-Stops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of rthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to door-stops, the objects in view being to provide a stop of simple and economic construction that is designed to be applied to the face of any swinging door, that can be operated by the foot, is adapted to securely hold the door at any point or lock the same closed, and which when not in use may be elevated out of operative position and securely held in such position against any accidental displacement during the ordinary opening and closing of the door.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following descriptionand the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawingss-Figure 1 is an elevationl of the lower portion of a door and its frame, the door being provided with a stop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the stop. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the practice of my invention I employ an oblong metal securing-plate 1, the same being preferably cast and provided at its four corners with screw receiving openings 2, whereby through the medium of screws the plate maybe secured to the face and near the lower edge of a door 3. The sill of the door 3 may have a socket or opening indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l for the reception of the bolt hereinafter described, whereby the door may be locked in a closed position and thus additional security rendered.
Cast integral with the plate lis a'bored cylinder 4 the same being open at both ends and provided between its ends with an inclined slot 5, and at one side with a communicating verticalslot 6. The upper end of the cylinder 4 is horizontal and is provided at that side opposite the slot 6 with a shallow depression or seat 7. Arranged over the bored lcylinder 4 is a bowed spring 8 the contour of the bow ofthe spring agreeing with the inner diameter of the bore of the cylinder 4. The
eyes 9 which register with the upper perforations 2 of the plate 1, so that screws 10 may be passed through the eyes and perforations, and in addition to serving to hold the plate in position upon the door also serve to secure the spring in position upon the plate. The bowed portion 11 of the spring is slightly depressed at its outer side so as to somewhat narrow the passage produced by it and the upper edge ofthe cylinder. Arranged within the cylinder and loosely fitting the same so as to be capable of both a longitudinal and rotary movement is a bolt 12. The bolt 12 is of greater lengththan the cylinder, and in fact about corresponds in length with the plate 1, so that when elevated within the cylinder -its upper end will pass within and through the bowed portion of the spring 8 whereby the latter acts as an additional keeper for the bolt. An operating arm 13 projects laterally and horizontally from the bolt near its upper end and is of such size as to adapt it to pass readily through the inclined slot 5 and the vertical slot 6 and by exerting pressure to also pass horizontally through the passage produced by tlie bowed spring 8 and the upper edge of the cylinder 4, and when swung to one side, that is above the` depression or said recess or seat, whereby it is retained in inoperative position and can only be dislodged by intent and as the result of a pressure laterally so as to cause it to repass under the spring to a point above the vertical slot 6, down which it readily gravitates until it falls into the inclined slot 5. Then by'pressure exerted by the foot or hand it is caused to travel down the inclined slot and hence the bolt at its lower end will b ind against the carpet Aor floor and secure the door at any point of opening.
When the holder is not in use the bolt is elevated in the manner described and swung to its inoperative position where it is held by the spring in the manner described. It may, however, be readily detached by the foot and thrown into operative position so as to lock extremities of the spring are bent to produce recess 7 to be compressed by said spring into IOO the door or hold the same against unwarrantable intrusion, or against the opening or closing of the door by wind or other force.
It will be seen that the holder may be cheaply and readily cast, the parts be readily assembled and applied to a door, and when `in position the same will be effective for the purposes for which it is intended.
My device may also be employed at the sides of window sashes for locking windows or preventing the same from rattling, and the lower end of the bolt may or may not as desired be provided with a rubber cushion to prevent marring and create friction.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a door holder the combination with a securing plate having upper and lower perforations and upon its front side a bored cylinder terminating short of the upper end of the plate, and having at one side a vertical slot and between its ends an inclined communieating slot, and in its upper end opposite the vertical slot provided with a recess or seat, of a bolt arranged in the cylinder for free vertical and longitudinal movement and `provided with a radial operating-arm, a bowed spring arranged above the cylinder on the front face of the plate and having an intermediate bowed portion corresponding to the bore of the cylinder and at its 'opposite ends bent to form eyes, said bowed portion being depressed above the upper end of the cylinder for the purpose of forcing and retaining the arm of the bolt in the recess of the cylinder, and screws passing through the eyes of the spring and the perforations of the plate, substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses. f
