LOOK FOR AUTOMOBILE-DOORS. 5
Application filed September 8, 1915. Serial No. 49,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. ANTEL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State. of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Automobile-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements 1n locks for automobile doors and the like The object of the present inventlon is to improve the construction of locks for automobile doors and various other closures and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive automobile lock adapted to be operated by either a knob or handle or a lever at the upper edgeof the door and capable when the latter is closed of automatically engaging a fixed catch or keeper whereby the door will besecurely locked.
With these and other invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being'understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without-departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan v1ew of a portion of an automobile door and body provided with a lock constructed 1n accordance with this invention, Fig.2 is a side elevation of the lock, the face plate being removed, Fig. 3 is a detail view of' the fixed catch or keeper, Fig. 4 is a detail v1ew of the removable faceplate of the lock, Fag. 5 1s a detail view of the spring actuated slide.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing. I I
In the accompanying drawing in which'is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the automobile door lock comprises in its construction, a pair of upper and lower horizontally disposed locklng levers 1 pivotally mounted at their rear ends in asuitable lock casing 2 and extending outwardly beyond the same and adapted to engage a tapered lug or pro ectmg portlon 3 Specification of Letters lfatent.

of a fixed catch or keeper. The lock casing which is provided with a removable face plate. 4 is mounted on the door 5 and-the fixed catch or keeper is'provided with an attaching plate'6 which is secured by screws 7 or other suitable. fastening devices body 8 of The locking levels 1 are. shownin a horizontal position in which they operate when the lock is applied to the door 'of an. automobile but of course it will be readily un .derstood that the lock may be used for various other. purposes and the levers will operate vertically as well as horizontally or to the the automobile as clearly illus-" trated 1n Fig. 1 of the drawing. 5
in fact in an position; The locking levers are provide at their rear ends with inwardly curved portions 9 which are overpivot 10 andthe said locking levers are urged inwardly toward each other and maintained normally in their engaging position by upper and lower flat springs 11 coiled at one end at 12 to increase their resiliency by providing spring bends and having their other ends free and bearing against the outer side edges of the locking levers.
The locking levers are provi inner side edges at points intermediate of their ends with tapered notches 13 forming ded at their upper and lower inclined faces and receiv;
ing a tapered or wedge shaped portion 14 of a spring actuated slide 15 which is adapt- "ed to be actuated by an operating lever 16 to cause the tapered or wedge. shapedportion 14 of the slide to engage the inclined faces or edges of the notches 13 and spread or open the locking levers to release the fixed catch or keeper and enable the door'to open. The slide 15 is provided with an opening 17 in which operates a coiled spring 18.which urges the slide forwardly or outwardly. -The inner or rear end of the slide is provided with a slot or recess 19 extendinglOngitudinally of the slideand engaging a pin or stud 20 for supporting the'iinner or rear end of the slide.
The operating lever 16 which is arranged in an upright position 1s provided at its upper or outer end with a suitable head or handle 21 and it has an opening 22 inits lower end to receive a suitable pivot 23.
The operating lever extends through the locking'levers and through. the slide and is adapted to engage a rounded face 24 thereof whereby it is adapted to be readily operatedurging the wedge around the same.
to actuate the slide against the action of the coiled spring 18. The locking levers are also adapted to be spread by opposite lugs 25 of a hub 26 which is mounted on a spindle 27 adapted to carry a suitable knob or handle 28 whereby the spindle is partially rotated to operate the hub and carry the lugs into engagement with the inner edges of the locking levers. The locking levers are provided at the hub with recesses 29 which presents curv'ed faces to the hub and enables the locking levers to fit closely What is claimed is 1. A lock of the class described including a pair of-lockin inner or rear en s, a slide located between the locking levers, said slide and locking levers having coacting means for spreading the levers when the slide is moved in one direction and means for urging the levers v inwardly.
2. A lock of the class described including a pair of pivoted locking substantial parallelism, a Wedge operating between the levers and adapted to spread the same, a spring for in one direction and a lever for moving the wedge in the opposite direction.
3. A lock of the class described including a pair of pivoted levers arranged in sublevers pivoted at their levers arranged in reclprocatory stantial parallelism and in spaced relation, said levers being provided at their inner edges with inclined faces, springs for urging the levers inwardly, a slide operating between the levers and slidably supported at one end and provided with a tapered or wedge shaped portion operating in the said recessesv and an operating lever extending through the slide and the locking levers and adapted to actuate the slide to spread the saidlocking levers.
4. In a lock of the class described including a pair of pivoted levers arranged in substantial parallelism, and in spaced relation, said levers being I edges at points intermediate of their ends withinclined faces, springs for urging the levers inwardly, a slide operating between the levers and slidably supported at one end and provided with a tapered or wedge shaped portion operating in said recesses, said slide provided with an opening, and a spring mounted in said opening adapted to urge the slide forwardly to permit the closing of the locking levers.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
