SAT'GHEL ATTACHMENT.
Patented Apr. 2, 1889.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A., YARGEE, on NEw HAMPTON, iowA.
SATCH EL ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,624, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed February 5, 1887. Serial No. 226,643. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t 11i/ay concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN A. YARGER, of New Hampton, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Satchel Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the Same. j
My invention is an improved attachment for satchels, and iS an improvement upon Letters Patent granted to me on the 30th of November, 1886.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment to hold the strap which is usually placed around satchels in place, and prevent it from becoming loosened, and also tolkeep the jaws of the Satchel together when locked, .and to release them So as to allow them to be opened when the fastening device is open.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the attachment in perspective. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section with the Strap ends in place. Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal section of the de vice.
` In the drawings, A` represents the baseplate of the attachment, which is directly conneeted by means of Suitable rivets to one jaw of the satchel-frame, one preferably being placed at each end ot' the satchel. At one side of this base-plate a loop, a, is formed for the connectionof one end ot the leather strap which surrounds the Satchel. From one side of the center of the upper Surface projects a pin, b. This is adapted to engage with the perforations formed in the other end of the strap.v The strap, after being secured at one end to the loop, is passed around the Satchel and the other end Secured in .placel by engaging with the pin. Two guide-flanges, c c, are
arranged upon each side of the pin, so as to hold the strap squarely in position.
In order to prevent the strap after it is put in place from becoming detached, a cover, A', is provided, pivoted at the point Z, so as to be swung down over the top of the strap, the front edge coming in front of one of the flanges c. The under part of the base-plate is hollowed out, as Shown, and a Spring, e, is secured therein, the free end of which bears against the cam-shaped end of the hinged cover, thus placing it always under springtension.
In order to keep the jaws of the Satchel closed and take the strain oit the lock and other parts,l provide two depending ears, f f, projecting from the rear part of the hinged cover. AS these ears are formed integral with the cover, they are properly in place when the cover is down in position; but they are lifted up when the cover is raised, so as to allow the satchel to open.
` I claim as my invention- The described attachment for satchels, consisting of a base-plate having a loop formed upon one Side for the attachment of the strap and a pin on its upper surface adapted to engage with the perfor-ations on the other end of the Strap, suitable guiding-lianges on each side, and a hinged cover under spring-tension having ears projecting from its rear part, Sub- Stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOHN A. YARGER.
