FRAME FOR TRAVELING-BAGS.

ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,623, dated February 28, 1888,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND G. SCHMIDT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved frame for traveling-bags of that class which are used as sample-bags by traveling agents and for other purposes; and the invention consists of a traveling-bag, the end walls of which are attached to transverse areshaped braces, to the ends of which the jaws of the bag-frame are hinged, said jaws being provided with flanged end pieces overlapping the braces. The extensions of the side walls of the bag-body are stitched to the jaws and the end pieces of the same, and open with the same, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved traveling-bag. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, showing the bag in open position. Fig. 3 is a top view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical transverse section on line a" .r, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top view of the frame, and Fig. 6 a vertical transverse section of the same.

In the drawings, A represents the body of my improved traveling-bag, which is made of stout leather or other suitable material, the end walls, a, being attached to transverse areshaped braces B of the frame C. To the ends of the braces B B are hinged the jaws C O of the frame C, said jaws being provided with angular end pieces, d d, the flanges d of which overlap the braces B B when the bag is closed, as shown in Fig. 1. The extensions of the side walls of the body A are stitched to the jaws and end pieces, which for this purpose are provided with holes for the stitches.

The frame 0 of the bag is provided with the usual handle and locking devices, one jaw overlapping the other, while the hinged end pieces, d, overlap the transverse arc-shaped braces B. The end walls, a, of the body A are skived off at the upper edges and folded over the arc-shaped braces B, as shown in Fig. 4, and sewed together with the lining by lines of stitches.

The transverse braces B impart a high degree of rigidity to the body A, while permitting the filling of the traveling-bag up to the line of said braces, over which the end pieces shape to the top of the bag, whereby the ap pearance of the same is greatly improved. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the body of a traveling-bag, of areshaped transverse braces to which the upper ends of the end walls of the said bag are applied, and jaws hinged to the ends of said braces, said jaws being pro vided with flanged arc shaped end pieces which overlap the transverse braces, to which end pieces and jaws the extensions of the side walls of the bag-body are attached, substantiall y as set forth.

2. A frame for traveling-bags, composed of arc shaped transverse braces, and of jaws hinged to the ends of said braces and provided with arc-shaped end pieces having flanges overlapping said braces, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the body of a traveling-bag, of arc-shaped transverse braces to which the upper ends of the end walls of the said bag are applied, said end walls being lapped around said braces, the lapped ends being united with the body by lines of stitching passing through the same and through the lining below said braces, and jaws hinged In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
