UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NE\VARK, NEYV JERSEY.
CATCH FOR HAND-BAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,770, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed November 6, 1856. Serial No. 218,130. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catches for Hand-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a more simple, durable, and effective catch for hand-bags and satchels at a reduced cost of construction.
The invention consists in an improved catch for hand-bags or satchels, and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan of myimproved frame and catch. Fig.
' 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section through line 00, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4.- is a detail, partly in sect-ion, of the inside of said catch.
In said drawings, a a are the jawsections of-the bag-frame A, which are U-shaped in cross-section, as indicated in Fig. 3, and suitably hinged or pivoted together in any ordinary manner. A catch-plate, 0, preferably formed or struck from sheet metal, to enable the same to be cheaply made, is pivoted, preferably by having the lateral ends thereof terminating in pins or pivotal lugs, as d d, between studs or bearingheads 0* 0 formed or secured to one of the frame-sections. In lieu of the integral pivotal projections, a separate or independent pivotal pin, either integral with the studs 0* or separate therefrom, may be provided.
On the upper side of the catch-plate, eccentric with the pivotal center of the plate, and preferably over the cooperating frame-section a, is formed or secureda fingenpiece or knob, 0*, whereby the said catch'plate may be lifted or raised from an engaging relation with the catch h of the said co-operating frame-section.
On the under side of the plate 0 (indicated more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4) are formed downward projections e and f, the former be ing a hook-like catch to engage the cooperating catch h. This is preferably riveted or soldered upon said plate, and is provided upon its outer edge with an incline, (2, adapted to cause the hook to ride upward and over the co-operating catch h automatically when the two frame-sections are closed together. The notch e of the hook to receive said co'operat ing catch, enabling it to hold the sections to gether, is formed at the inner side of the hook, as shown in Fig. 3, so that after the catchplate and hook ride over the co-operating catch, as described, and are depressed by the springs 'g, or by the hand, the spring-power inherent in the frame-sections and tending to separate one from the other will cause the said cooperating catch to enter the notch and hold the catch in place and the sections to gether.
Back of the hook and eccentric to the pivotal center of the catch'plate, and at a point about midway between the studs 0 0, is formed or secured a depending lug or bearing, f, above referred to. This co-operates with the said studs 0* c to receive and hold a spring, 1 which is bowed over said lug or bearing and at its opposite ends turned around or otherwise secured to said studs, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. The operation of the spring thus arranged is to limit the upward movement of the catch-plate, so that the fingerpiece cannot be brought to the under side thereof, and to hold said plate at a point or position where it will automatically engage the hook, as before described.
The lug or bearing f extends downward sufficiently to limit the downward movement of the plate by engaging the frame to which it is secured, and so that the catch-plate is held in a horizontal position, or one parallel with the top of the frame-sections when held together.
issued to me, and possesses no especial features of novelty, except in the fact that said bar or shaft is formed or arranged in a plane nearer that of the top of the frame-sections than that of the pivotal center of the catch-- plate, so that when the said catch-plate is held horizontally, as above described, by means of the cooperating spring and depending lug or hearing, the incline edge of the hook will enter properly into engagement with the said bar of the co-operating catch.
By the construction thus described a catch is provided at comparatively little cost, possessing in the market the advantages of simplicity of construction'and a novel arrangement of parts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new isl V 1. The combination, with studs 0 c of a jawsection, of a catch-plate arranged between said studs and provided with a finger-piece, a depending lug, f, and hook-like projection 6, adapted to engage a cooperating catch of the other vjaw-section of the bag, and a spring which is bowed over said lug f and turned around said studs c c said )arts bein arranged'and adapted tooperate substantially V as set forth.
2. The combination, with studs 0 c of a jawsection of a bag-frame, of a sheet-metal plate terminating at the opposite sidein pins or pivotal lugs, which work in saidstuds, said plate being provided on the upper side with a finger-piece and on the under side with depending lugs e andf, and aspring engaging the lug f and turned around said studs, and a co-opcratingcatch arranged on the opposite jawsection of the frame to engage the depending lug or projection f, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of November, 1886.
AUGUST GOERTZ.
