SATCHEL on BAG FRAME.
SJPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N0. 303,722, dated August 19, 1884.
Application tiled April 24, 1854. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New .Iersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Satchel or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
The object of this invention is to increase the utility of a satchel or bag frame, to render the same more convenient, and to allow the said frame to be more readily manufactured.
It consists in the arrangements and combinations ot' parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indi catelike parts in each of the several iigures, Figure l is a plan of a bag or satchel frame. Fig. 2 is a side view of the middle portion of the same. Fig. 4 is an end View; Fig. 3, a section taken through line Fig. 5, an inverted plan of the lockingor catching mechanism; Fig. 6, a sec tion through line y; Fig. 7, a section through line as', and Fig. 8 a detail perspective view of one of the ends of the mid-section.
In carrying out the invention I form the bagframe of three sections, a a b, the latter being a midsection, n-shaped when viewed in crosssection, the top of which projects slightly above the adjacent sections aV a. Said sections c a areV approximately right angular in cross-section, and abut against the sides of the n-shaped portion, as shown, said sides''furnishing a wide seat or abutment for the said edges, so that` the parts need receive but little care in adjusting them. The ends of the midframe are provided. with laterally-projecting pivotal ears c c, to which the side sections, a a, are riveted apart to secure a passage between, so that a metal framebordering theusual partition leather or fabric can slide between the ends of said sections c a up into the socket formed by the n -shaped mid-frame, thus overcoming the difficulties experienced when the sections are pivoted on'a single rivet, it then being, in small work, impossible to slide the frame into position. each provided with holdinglugs e c, having oppositely-inclined edges. `To engage said lugs I secure upon the midsection b abox, f, having a notched cylindrical center with laterally-ex tending spring-chambers g g. Rotating in said center isV a cylindrical iingerpiece having notches 7L 71l in the edges thereof adapted to correspond with the notches i i in the box f, and projections hh, adapted to cover said notches t' i, and thus prevent an exit-passage of the holding-lugs. Said rotating iinger-piece is also perforated Vor recessed to receive the ends of springs j j, which latternormally hold the finger-piece down on the frame b, and in a locked relation to the box f. Said box is secured to the mid-section by fasteningtongues 75, which are arranged in the openings Z.
The operation of the catch is substantially as follows: When the side sections are closed to` gether, either simultaneously or otherwise, the inclined edges of thelugs e engage with the projections m and throw the cylindrical fingerpiece upward, as in Fig. 6, until said lugspass the edges of the cylindrical finger-piece,when
the spring j causes the said cylindrical iingeri piece to fall into holding engagement with said lugs e. The said spring also causes the projection to cover the notches in the box. To unlock the bag, the iinger-piece is turned until `the notches in the box correspond with those in the finger-piece, when the lugs c e on The side frames, a a, are u the frames a a have free passage through them,
so that the bag may be opened. By this construction both sections of the bag-frames a a may be unlocked simultaneously by a single turning of the rotating piece.
, Having thus described the invention, what I claim asnew is 1. In a triplesection bag or satchel frame having secured to the mid-section a box, f, having spring-chambers and notches, a rot-ating notched iingerpiece engaging with the side sections, and a spring or springs, andthe said side sections having catches to receive the IOO inger-piece, all said parts being arranged, combined, and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a triple-section bag-franie, the combination of the mid-section bent double or nshaped to receive a partition fabric, and its bordering frame, and having laterally-pro jecting ears c c, and outer sections, a a., pivoted upon independent pivots upon said ears, the ends of said outer sections being separated to allow the passage of the said partition fabric and frame therebetween, substantially as set forth. o
8. In a bag-frame, the combination, with a mid-section and outer sections arranged at 15 each side thereof, of a pivoted spring-catch arranged to rotate on said mid-section, for the purpose of engaging with the outer sections to hold the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 2o have hereunto set niy hand this 14th day of April, 1884.
AUG. GOERTZ.
