- F. W. HEILMANN.
SATHEL ORBAG FRAME.
10.514,890.v y 5 PatentedPeb.13,1a94.
y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. HEILMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. F. KITCHELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY.
SATCHEL OR BAG FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 514,890, dated February 13, 1894. Application filed September 14, 1893. Serial No. 485,465. (No'model.)
To all whom it may con/cern: i
Be it known that I, FREDERICK \V. HEIL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of EssexV and Slate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Satchel or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the followlng to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others- Io skilled in the art to which it appertains t0 make and use the same, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention isto provide 'an improved device for holding the Satchelframe open, to reduce the cost of construction and to secure other advantages hereinafter referred to.
The invention consists in the improved holdlng device, and in the arrangement and combination of the parts thereof, as herein set forth and finally pointed out in the claims.
Referrlng to the accompanying drawings, z 5 1n whlch similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in each of the figures where they occur, Figure l, represents, in plan,.one end of a bag-frame opened and embodying myimprovement, and Fig. 2 is a simi- 3o lar view, not opened so fully as in Fig. 1, and
showing the central portion partially in section, exposing to view, in elevation, the working parts and their relations to one another.
Fig. 3,.is a section taken through the line .fr
of Figi; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are detail views,
in elevation or plan. Y. I
In rsaid, drawings, a, designates the opposite sides 'of the bag-frame which are constructed 1n the usual manner; and b, a housing'or cap 40 which incloses the working parts and serves as a seat or bearing for one end of a spring c.
Secured to one side of the frame is an arm, d,
which carries an annular plate e, the outer surface of which is serrated or provided with inclined projections,e, alternating with corresponding depressions which engage, in holding relation, with an annular plate f having similar projections, f', and depressions and mounted upon a pintle orv rivet, g,which passes through and holds the several vparts together,
as indicated in the drawings; said plate f, being movable on said rivet longitudinally, and bearing against the spring, c, which serves to hold said plate, f, normally .in frictional contact with the plate e, as will be understood. The outer end of the pintle gis riveted upon the frame and is hidden by a cap, h, secured to said frame; and the hinge-ends of the frame are separated by a washer, t', which, however, may be dispensed with, if desired, 6o as may also the arm, d, in which latter event the annular plate e may be attached to or connected directly with the frame, as will be understood.
As herein shown, the plates e and f have more projections than are absolutely necessary, as one projection on each plate, properly located, would be snfcient to hold the bag o'pen to its fullest extent or to any desired l extent, but, two or three projections will, of 7o course bepreferable.
It will be seen from the foregoing that, as the bag-frame is being opened or closed the teeth or projections e and f ride over or upon one another and into the intervening depressions automatically, the plates being, by the operation alternately forced apart and together, against and by the pressure of the spring, which is sufficient to hold the frame open when released by the hands, as will be 8o understood. l Thus the necessity of manipulating the holding device is avoided and both hands are left free to grasp the opposite sides of the frame in the operation of opening or closing the bag, as will be obvious. 8 5
The device may be applied to either end or to both ends of the bag-frame, as will be obvious, and the operation thereof will be evident without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what 9o I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a bag-frame, the combination with the hinge-pin or rivet thereof, of two plates having alternate inclined projections and depressions and arranged in juxtaposition with each other upon said pin,and aspring also mounted on said pin and adapted to automatically hold said plates in engagement with one an-y other, as the bag or frame is being opened or roo closed, as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a bag-frame, the combination with the hinge-pin thereof, of two plates having alternate inclined projections and depressions and arranged upon said pin in juxtaposition With one another, a spring also mounted on said pin, and a housing or cap, said parts being arranged in relation to one another and to operate automatically substantially as described 1o and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of September, 1893.
FREDERICK W. HEILMANN.
