UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOTH-POWDER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,145, dated September 17', 1878; application filed June 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BELL, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Toothlowder Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and Jfigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of aplan view of mytooth-powderbox open, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through :v w. Fig. 3 is a section showing the box closed.
The object of my invention is to furnish a receptacle for tooth-powder or the like, to prevent the main bulk of the powder from coming in contact with the wet brush or cloth, or with any powder that remains on the brush or cloth. To this end I construct a box, which serves as a reservoir for the tooth-powder or other inaterial, and provide for such box a screened plate, through which screen the powder is furnished to the brush. This screen is an inner cover to the reservoir, and the whole is covered by a hinged or other lid, which is adapted to not only prevent the powder from escaping outside of the box, but, by a lan ge corresponding in form to the inner screened lid, prevents the escape of the ,powder through the screen.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the reservoir, provided with an opening, A', on
its upper surface. A screened lid, B, is hinged at onev side of the opening A and makes a close joint. A rabbet, O, upon the upwardlyextending sides of the reservoir receives the covering-lid D. Upon the inner surface of this lid is a flange, d, corresponding to the form or" the inner screened lid, and adapted to inelose the same. Y
The powder is screened through the inner lid, B, to the upper surface of which the brush or cloth is applied.
I do not conne myself to a receptacle for tooth-powder, as the device vmay be used for other purposes without departing from the principle of my invention, and any form of box-round, oblong, square, or rectangularmay be used.
- Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tooth-powder box herein described, consisting of the box-body forming the reservoir A, provided with orificeA, the screened hinged lid B, covering said orifice, the rabbet C, extending above the top of the reservoir, and the hinged cover D, having flange d, adapted to inclose the raised screened lid B, as herein specified.
Invtestimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY BELL.
