SANITARY BUTTER-TUB.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BRADLEY R. KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Butter-Tubs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in butter-tubs and has for its object the provision of a tub of this character which will be air tight and will keep the butter contained therein in a sanitary condition for a greater length of time than the tubs now in use.

Another object is to provide a tub of this character which will take the place of the old wooden and tin tubs now in use. Butter packed in wooden tubs if placed in cold storage for any length of time will taste of the wood, and tin tubs soon become rusty when butter stands in them any length of time and spoil the contents.

Another object is to provide a cover for such a tub, having novel means for securing the same to the tub and render the tub airtight.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency, durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time being simple in construction and operation.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawing in which;

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved butter-tub with the cover secured therein; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the body of the tub which is formed from sheet metal or other suitable material and having its interior lined with enamel, as shown at 2, white enamel being preferred, but any desirable color can be used. The exterior is also covered with a light coating of enamel as shown at 2' to give the tub a neat and clean appearance. The tub is preferably made in the shape as shown in Fig. 1, but it can be made into any desirable shape. The upper or open end Specification of Letters Patent.

of the tub is to have its edges slightly curved outwardly as shown at 3, forming a shoulder 3]Oso that the cover will set tightly on the tu The cover 41 is formed of sheet metal and having its under side enameled with white enamel as shown at 5 to correspond to the interior of the body of the tub. The outer edge of the cover is bent in a vertical posi tion forming a flange 6 and strips 7 formed of sheet metal are hinged to the upper edge of the flange 6 by means of the knuckle 8 formed on the flange and the two knuckles 9 formed on the strips 7 and pivoted together by means of the pin 10. These strips 7 are to be disposed through the transverse openings 11 formed in the upper edge of the tub and are provided with longitudinal slots 12 adapted to engage over the staple 13 secured to the side of the tub. These strips can be fastened on the staple by means of a pin or can be securely locked by means of the lock 14. In this way the cover will be securely held on the tub and can not be removed by any one not in possession of the key, thereby preventing any thefts.

The staples 13 are secured to the body by being formed integral with the plates 15 which are secured to the body by means of the rivets 16. Thin sheets of rubber 17 are disposed between the washers 18 and the inside of the tub to prevent any air from entering at this point. In having an outwardly curved top 8, and having a flange 6 formed on the cover, a groove 19 will be formed around the top into which can be poured paraflin or waxQO to seal the tub for placing it in cold storage, making it an absolutely air tight and sanitary package.

The slots 12 out in the strips 7 which are hinged to the cover are to allow an adjustment of the cover so as to bring it down tightly against the tub making it an air tight tub.

It will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.

WVhat is claimed is:

1. A receptacle comprising a body formed of sheet metal, having its interior and exterior coated with enamel and provided with oppositely disposed openings, said body having its upper edge curved slightly outwardly and a shoulder formed thereby, a cover disposed in the top of said tub and resting on said shoulder, a flange formed on said cover, formed by bending the edge of the cover in a vertical position, strips of sheet metal pivoted on said flange and disposed through said openings and secured to the side of the body.

2. A receptacle comprising a body formed of sheet metal having its interior and exterior coated with enamel and provided With oppositely disposed openings, a cover disposed in the top of said receptacle, said cover being provided With a vertically disposed flange, strips of sheet metal hinged to the upper edge of said flange, said strips being disposed through said openings in the body, staples secured to the side of the body, said strips having slot formed therein to engage over said staples and a lock secured in the staples for securely fastening the cover in the body.
