IMPROVEMENT IN MEAT-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,140, dated July 25, s1876 application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LUNDGREN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Gan for Packing Meats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact descriptiou thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and convenient can for packing headcheese, beef', andv similar articles, and toconstruct the same in such a manner that the contents thereof can be readily removed therefrom, whole and unbroken, without injuring the can, so that the latter may be used several times.
My improvements consist, lrst, in providing the can with a movable or loose bottom, and arranging theA same in such a manner that it can be used to expel the contents of the can also, in the combination of a catch 'of improved construction for fastening down the lid, with a flange formed on the under side Aof the-lid for keeping it in position; and in the combination -and arrangement of the several parts, whereby the use of solder lfor the top and bottom is dispensed with, and the contents can readily and easily be removed without injuring the can, so that the latter may be used several times for packing, all of which is hereinafter particularly described.
In' the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improvedcan, with portions broken away to show the interior. Fig. Z is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

A is the body of the can, which may be of tin or other suitable material, and either rectangular or circular; and, if desired, it may be made slightly tapering from its upper to its lower end, so that its contents may be the more readily expelled. Extending around its lower edges is an inwardly-projecting flange, c, upon which rests the movable or loose bottom B, which latter is of such dimensions that it will [it closely to the sides and ends at the bottom of the can when in position. C is a wire loop or link, the lower portion of which is hinged to the body of the can, and the upper portion is bent at such an angle thereto that it will lie snugly ou the upper surface of the lid D, after being passed over `a lug, b, formed upon or secured to the said lid. This lug b is semicylindrical in form, and the wire lis sprung over it in fastening down the lid.
Two or more of these devices are used on each can, by means of which the lid is pressed dow'n iirinly on the top of the can.
The outer edges of the lid D rest upon the rim of the body of the can, and on the under side of the said 'lid I form a continuous flange or projection, c, which fits closely within the upper end of the can, and keeps the lid immovably in position.
. For the purpose of making air-tight joints,
'when such are desired, a packing of rubber or other suitable material may be inserted between the bottom B and flanges a, and also between the top of the can and the lid; but this I do not claim as part of my present invention.
l may state, in conclusion, that the can above described can be manufactured and soldat as low a price as one in which the top and bottom are soldered in the usual manner; and it possesses the several advantages ot' permitting the contents being removed whole; of requiring no loss of time in opening it and removing the contents, as all that is necessary to be done is to turn back thewire fasteners, take oft' the lid, and press on the vbottom B, and of being capable ot' being used a number of times.
What I claim as my invention is l. A can for packing meats provided with flanges a at its lower edges, andY with a movable or loose bottom, B, arranged as herein shown and described, to operate in the manner set forth.
