Be it known that I, HARVEY SEWARD, citi zen of the United States, residing at Petersbnrg, county of Dinwiddie, and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders for Packing-Iteceptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to This invention relates to a hat holding device, and particularly to a construction adapted for application to a trunk tray or other packing receptacle.

The numeral lOdesignates the body of the tray the cover of which is formed in separate sections 11 which are pivotally connected by means of the retaining straps 12. These straps are secured to the back wall of the tray body and pass downwardly through an aperture 13 in the fixed toppiece 1 1, thence upward through an aperture 15 in one of the sections 11 and downwardly through a similar aperture 16 in the same section. The tray cover may be provided with any sired number of sections, the front section thereof being formed with an aperture 17 I through which the strap 12 passes upward and is adapted to be connected to a secur ing tab 18 fastened to the front of thetray at 19 and provided with any suitable form of buckle 20 by which it is fastened to the strap 12. Each of the joints between the sections of the tray top is provided with a retaining strap 21 secured at 22 to the adjacent ends of the sections so as to prevent the bending of the direction or toward the body of the tray. In the operation of the invention it will be seen that the straps form flexible and durable hinges for the sections of the tray cover which permit them to be folded upward without injury to the hinges thereof and also form means which, in connection ermit the cover to be held in closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, to retain the contents of the tray.

The retalmng straps prevent a movement of the cover section in the opposite direction thus maintaining it rigid when it is desired to close the cover and preventing any movement of these sections toward the body of the cover. a

The hat holder within the tray is adapted to be readily removed by swinging the holding bails downward, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that flat articles can be packed in the tray. When these bails are in holding position they are retained against accidental dis placement by the elasticity of the metal thereof and the seat formed in one of the bails to engage and hold the opposite bail. It will therefore be seen that the invention presents a simple, efficient and economically constructed form of hat holder adapted for application to any character of packing receptacle.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a hat holder, a base, a removable body seated thereon, and a bail pivoted at its opposite ends upon said base to swing over and embrace said body upon the base.
