EDWARD I. SMITH, OF PITTSTQN, PENNSYLVANIA.
LUNCH BOX.
Application filed April 3, 1924. Serial No. 704,037.
To all whom it may concern:
' Beit known that I, EDWARD P. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and Improved Lunch Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to receptacles and has particular reference to a lunch box for carrying solid and liquid foods.
The principal objects and advantages of the present invention reside in the provision of a receptacle of the character set forth which combines in a single article a receiving compartment for liquids and a receiving compartment for solid foods, thereby eliminating the necessity of carrying separatecontainers for each.
As a further ob ect the lnvention com preheuds a receptacle of the character set forth in which the solid food compartment is capable of expansion and contraction to in crease or decrease its capacity, and which compartment may be contracted when empty in order to occupy the minimum amount of space.
As a still further object the invention resides in a receptacle of the character set forth which is con'iparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is highly etlicient for the purpose for which it is intended.
lVith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides 111 the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed. 1
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lunch box in opened condition.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough with the parts in closed relation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, illustrating the receptacle in closed condition.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the lunch-box consists of a body 10 having a closed side 11 and an open side 12. A cover member 13 including a closed side 14 and an open side 15 is adapted to telescopically fit over the open side of the body 10. The cover member 13 is provided with a substantially central longitudinal partition 16 which defines a liquid receiving compartment 17, one end of which compartment is formed with a filling nozzle 18 adapted to receive a closure plug 19. The partition 16 acts as a stop for limiting the relative telescopic movement of the body 10 and cover member 13, and the partition together with the flanges 20 and 21 at the edges of the members 10 and 13 and with the closed side 11 define a compartment 22 for the reception of solid foods. This compartment is adjustable in size to increase or decrease the capacity of the compartment whereby to accommodate lunches of various sizes. Ordinarily the cross sectional size of the complete article admits of the carrying of the same within the pocket, but in some instances where the compartment is expanded to the maximum capacity, it is found that the size is increased to such an extent as to prevent carrying of the same in the pocket and for this reason a pair of eye members 23 are provided on the cover member 13 to receive therethrough a strap 24: for suspending the device from the shoulder. If desired, in order to prevent accidental opening of the device a suitable embracing element 25 may be employed for encircling the sections 11 and 13. It will be further observed that an eye member 26 is pivotally attached to the end of the cover member 13 opposite to that end which is provided with the filling nozzle 18, whereby the same may be suspended from a hook or nail to drain the compartment 17 after it has been washed and cleansed.
I claim:
1. A lunch box comprising a box-like body member having an open side and a closed side, a box-like cover member having a closed side and an open side, said cover member having a central longitudinal partition defining between the closed side and said partition a liquid receptacle provided at one end with a filling nozzle and a clo-' sure element therefor, the open sided portion of the cover member adapted to telescopically receive the open side of the body memher to define a compartment for the reception of solid foods, the said latter compartment being adjustable in size whereby to increase and decrease the capacity thereof by member to define a compartment for the reception of solid foods, the said latter compartment being adjustable in size whereby to increase and decrease the capacity thereof by relative telescopic adjustments of the sections, means at the end of the cover member which is provided with the filling nozzle for suspending the same when filled, and means at the opposite end of the cover member for suspending the same when empty with the closure plug removed to drain the same.
