Description

Res. 3; 1925. 1,524,751
S. SONIN HA'IBOX 'Filed July 23, 1923 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
SAM SON'IN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
HATBOX:
Application filed July 23, 1923.
To all "co/10m it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM Somx, a citizen of the United States, and resident. of Kansas City, county of Jackson, State of h'lissouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hatboxes, of which the following is a complete specification.
The present invention relates to baggage equipment, and particularly to baggage receptacles of the type known as hat boxes, and aims to provide an improved hat box construction making use of a partition member or closure between the main body portion of the box and its cover member, for the purpose of providing an auxiliary compartment within the cover member of the box,
Accordingly, I have devised an improved hilt box construction in which a partition member is hingedly connected to the box adjacent to the hinged connection between the cover member and the box. so that the partition member operates readily as a movable closure for the auxiliary compartment thus formed within the cover member, and I also provide a flexible hinge piece for the partition member, thereby enabling the latter to conveniently accommodate its position in accordance with the amount of space required for ber.
As a further feature of the impro.'en1ents, I provide the partition member with a pocket structi'ire on either or both of its faces. for convenient use in the packing of various articles. v
\Vith the foregoing genera-l objectsin view, the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating one form of construction which l have devised for embodying the proposed improvements, after which those features deemed to be. novel will be. particularly set packing within the cover memforth and claimed.
In ll-ie drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrat- .ing a hat. box embodying the present inven- 1011, and showing the box and the auxiliary partitionmember in open position;
Serial No. 653,172.
tion as comprising a main'body or receptacle portion 4 provided with the usual type of cover member 5 hingedly conneeted,as indicated at- 6, to one side of the main portion of the box 4, said cover member 5 being provided with a marginal rim or flange 7, adapted to embrace the mouth or opening into the main body or the receptacle portion 4, in the usual manner. This is merely common, ordinary construction, and the shape of the box and its cover member may be of any desired form, such as that illustrated in the drawing, or any other form, square. round, or other shape that may be preferred. Inside the main body portion of the box is mounted the usual hat form 8 over which the hat is to be placed, and at one or more points Within the interior of said body portion 4 may be provided a pocket 9 for the reception of articles to be packed.
The interior of the body portion 4- and also of the cover 5 may be lined in the usual manner, and in addition the present improvements contemplate the formation of a separate auxiliary compartment within the cover member 5 adapted to be maintained closed, except when access thereto is' desired, by means of an auxiliary closure member. For this purpose I provide a partition member 10 of such shape as will adapt it to fit snugly within the flange or rim portion 7 of the cover member, and preferably formed with a flange or rim 11, although this is not essential. At one side of the partition member 10, preferably adjacent to the hinge 6 between the cover member and main body portion 4, a hinge piece-12 of suitable flexible material is provided for connecting the partition member to one of the members of the box, Figure 2 illustrating this con nection being made to the interior of the flange 7 of the cover member. I also pro-- vide one or more stay pieces 1 -1 of a flexible character, connecting the partition member 10 with the cover member 5, and limiting the relative opening movement of the partition member, as illustrated in Figure 2.
It is common to provide the interior of the cover member With a pocket, of the character indicated at 9 in Figures 1 and 2,
and while this practice may be followed out character, adapted for the convenient storing or packing of articles in these locations where they are obviously particularly accessible.
With the provision of the flexible hinge strip 12, it is apparent that the partition member 10 is not only movable in the fashion of a hinged closure member, but the size of the auxiliary compartment within the cover is also conveniently varied according to the amount of space required for packing within the cover behind the partition member 10, since the hingestrip 12 will simply extend or collapse to the required extent. ll further provide fastening devices in the form of tabs 17 secured to the inner face of the rim or flange 7 and each adapted to engage one of a series of companion fastening elements 18 provided in sets on the outer face of the partition member 10, an adjustable fastening means being thus afforded, as required by the variable extent to which the partition member 10 is telescoped within the cover'member.
It is thus apparent that a most convenient construction is provided for affording an auxiliary compartment within the cover member of boxes of this character, which compartment may be maintained closed by means of the movable partition member 10,
. thus permitting the packing or storing of articles which the user may desire to be kept out of View and separate from the artlcles stored in the main body portion of the box. "l'he provision of a partition member of this type, and carrying pockets on either or both of its faces, is likewise deemed to be a novel feature of construction in this class of devices. The partition member requires but small space, and is most convenient in its operation, and its method of supporting the pocket structure 15 all'ords a decided advantage in the use of this-type of baggage.
While I have illustrated and described what is now regarded as preferred form of construction for embodying the proposed improvements, the right is reserved to make all such changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A hat box comprising a main receptacle and a shallow hinged cover member provided with a rim or flange adapted to telescope over the rim or flange of said main receptacle, a partition member adapted to form a closure for the space inside said cover member, said partition member having a hinged connection at the inside of and above the telescoping portion of said cover member, a pocket carried by each face of said partition member, and fastening devices for securing said partition member in closed position with relation to said cover member.
In witness whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
S SONIN.
