2 Claims. (o1.129-1) This invention relates generally to improvements in pencil boxes or containers for pencils, pens and like articles as used by students.
The main'object of the invention is to provide a pencil box for use with and attachment to the usual loose-leaf note book of the type employing a book-like cover having front and back sections joined by a relatively wide bight or center carrying rings to which the leaves or paper sheets are attached. When closed the front and back sections of this kind of cover converge toward their free margins and a considerable open space is formed between the front section and the leaves of paper in the book and it is in this space that the present invention is arranged to lie.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind including a box or body portion tapered or wedge shaped in cross section so as to nicely conform to the angular open space between the note book cover and note book leaves as described above and so that the otherwise lost space is thus employed for a useful purpose and the exterior or total bulk of the book is not increased by the addition of the pencil box.
Another object is to provide a pencil box of this kind including a mounting lip or flange extended from the thicker margin of the box and apertured to loosely engage and mount on the note book rings so that the box may be swung back out of the way while writing in the book.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind in a simple compact and attractive form comprising a box or body portion having upstanding margins at one side and both ends, the said margins at the ends tapering or diminishing in height toward the free side and this side having a roll hinge, a top or cover hinged at this side of the box and adapted to close and cover the same forming a covered box of tapered or wedge shaped cross section, a flange extended from the wider side of the box and apertured to engage the leaf holding rings of the note book cover, and partitions in the box dividing the same interiorly into compartments for pencils, pens and like articles.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is an end view of a conventional note book equipped with the pencil box.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the pencil box alone.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the box alone, the cover being partially opened.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmental perspective view of a sliding partition and associated parts of the box.
Referring now with more particularity to the drawing the reference character A designates a 5 loose-leaf note book of conventional form comprising a book cover having front and back sections B and C and relatively wide connecting bight D carrying a spreader or bar E in which spaced parted rings F (only one shown) are arranged. The filler or paper leaves G are mounted in the cover by attaching them to these rings F. This is a conventional assembly and no invention therefor is claimed herein. The width of the bight D is such that when normally loaded with paper and when closed as shown the front and back cover sections B and C converge toward their free outer sides and a considerable space 5 is left between the paper G and the adjacent front B near the rings F as shown. It is the essence of the present invention to provide a pencil box to occupy this otherwise unused space 5 and without increasing the bulk of the note book to provide a convenient container for all writing and drawing instruments commonly used in connection with the book by students and the like.
To this end I provide a box or body portion 5 made up of any suitable material comprising an elongated rectangular bottom 6 having integral upstanding ends 7 and one predetermined inner side 8, the other and opposite predetermined outer margin 9 being rolled up into spaced hinge ears Ill. The said ends 1 taper or diminish in height from the side 8 toward the hinge side of the box as shown. A box cover I I of complemental size and shape has rolled hinge ears I2 at 'one predetermined outer margin adapted for interdigitating association with the aforesaid ears II] to receive a hinge pin I3 by which the box and cover are hinged together. The cover II has flanges or lips It turned down around three sides to fit over the ends 1 and side 8 of the box and at the free side of the cover a spring clasp ear I5 is extended and apertured at I6 to releasably engage a pin H on the box side 8 to hold the cover closed in well known manner. A mounting flange or lip E8 is extended from the bottom of the box 5 along the length of the side 8 and at spaced points has apertures I9. Upstanding partitions 20 divide the box 5 into compartments of any desired and suitable size and shape and in the arrangement here shown a parallel pair of the partitions are spaced from the bottom 6 of the box as indicated at 2| so as to slidably clear the ends 22 of a slidable stop or partition 23 55 mounted between the partitions as shown. This slidable stop 23 may thus be moved to any desired position and of course pens, pencils, compasses, rules, combs, cosmetics and all such small articles commonly carried by students may be placed in the box. Due to the fact of the box cover I I being hinged to the outer margin of the box 5, and closing inwardly towards the bight D of the book cover, the box cover is automatically held closed by the book cover proper when the latter is closed, independently of any clasp such as described above.
In use the rings F are opened and then passed through the apertures IQ of the flange I8 and then closed connecting the box 5170 'the rings S0215 that it will lie fiat on the paper .G as shown. The box itself when closed is of tapered or wedgeshaped cross section and so nicelyfits inthe space 5 between the paper and note book cover and does not raise or open the cover frontB;
When the-cover front B is then opened the box may be opened to remove any of its contents and then the box if desired may be swung back off the paper Fout of the way.
The flange l8 sets the box 5 out from the rings F so that the box will clear nicely and this flange is rolled or bowed upwardly somewhat at its outer margin as indicated at 24 soas to better conform to the position-and shape of the paper filler G on which it rests and to allow the box to restfiat on this filler as shown.
While I have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I mayvary from the samein minor structural details, so as best to construct a prac tical device for the purpose intended, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described for mounting in a loose leaf note book comprising a book cover having front and back sections joined by a bight portion of substantial width and supporting a plurality vof regularly spaced leaf attachment rings,'abox.having a mounting flange perforated in registry and thereby arranged to engage the said rings, the box having a cover hinged thereto at its outer margin and arranged to close inwardly upon the box towards the bight of the book cover, whereby the box cover is automatically held closed'when the book cover is closed. 2. In a deviceof the kind described for mounting in .,.a loose leaf book embodying two cover sections connected by a bight portion, there being-.agplurality of regularlyspaced leaf attachmentrings supported, along, the, inner side ofthe bight portion..a.boxhaving an extended mounting.:fiange perforated in registry with the said rings,the -box-beingitapered from its inner to its outer side for conforming substantially to the tapered formation of the book itself when mount-V ed between the cover'sections thereof, and having abox cover hinged thereto at its outer margin and-:arrangedto close inwardly upon the box towards the bight of thebox cover, whereby the box'cover is automatically Iheld closed when the book cover is closed.
