COMBINED DESK BLOTTER AND BOX File d Sept. 30. 1923 Patented Dec. 16, 1930 UNITED STATES EMIL A. SCH'UELKE, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NAPIER COMPANY,
PATENT" OFFICE OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION COMBINED DESK BLO'ITER AND BOX Application filed September 30, 1929. Serial No. 396,053.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined desk blotters and boxes. Desk blott-ers of this type are commonly formed with a segmental bottom which is covered by a piece of blotting-paper which is generally clamped to the base by a plate with a'handle screwed through the top and into the base.
The object of this invention is to form a hollow base to provide a box for cigarettes, vanity or other articles and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a combined'desk blotter and cigarette box constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in the closed position;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4.4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the box with the cover open.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a box 10 having a longitudinally bowed bottom 11, and the ends of this bottom are turned down over the outside of the bottom, forming lips 12 for the reception of the ends of astrip 13 of blotting-paper. The upper edge of one of the side walls M of the box is formed with knuckles 15, and a flat top 16 is formed with corresponding knuckles 17, through which knuckles a pin 18 extends so as to hinge the .cover to the box. This cover is formed at its front and ends with a short flange 19 which sets over the edge of the box, and the cover is provided with a suitable knob or handle 20.
A box thus formed is adapted to receive a number of cigarettes or other articles, which are convenient of access at a desk and without occupying space additional to the desk blotter, and as the box and cover are formed from metal, a very attractive fitting is provided.
I claim:
1. A box having a longitudinally bowed bottom provided at opposite sides with lips for the reception of ends of a strip of blottingedge and ends with a depending flange setting over and engaging with the edges of the box and also provided'on its to? with a handle. In testimony whereof, have signed this specification.

paper, and a cover hinged to one side of the box and provided on its top with a handle. 2. A box having a longitudinally bowed
