VANITY CASE.
This invention has for its object the pro vision of a vanity case in which atoilet article receiving tube shall, when the holding means 'for the cover of the case -is released. assume such a position that the contents of the tube may be readily withdrawn. The invention further aims so to arrange the tube that it shall cause the cover of the'case to open when the latter is unlatched. The
invention is carried -into effect by hinging one end of the tube to the case and provlding resilient means between the bottom of the case and the tube whereby the latter will be tilted into such position that a lip stick or, other. toilet article therein may be .readily withdrawn therefrom. The swinging end of the tube is disposed to p-ress upon the cover in such manner as to swing the same open upon release of the latch. l
Other features of Anovelty and construe` i f tion will appear from the detailed description ofthe invention taken in connection with accompanying drawings inwhich,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the vanity case with the cover fully open and showing the general arrangement thereof.
Fig. 2 is a side. elevation of the vanity case, parts manner in which the tube for the lip stick In the drawings like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The vanity Acase comprises a pair of hinged members of' which 10 indicates the cover and 11 the receptacle-part or box of the same, 12 indicating any suitable type of hinge between the two members. The receptacle 11 is provided with pockets 13 an-d 1-1 which are adapted to. receive rouge and powder. The powder puffs are indicated at 15.
Arranged at either side of the box. 11 are tubes 16 for receiving toilet articles. Telescopically received within a tube 16 is a holder 17 within which the lip stick L is contained. The holder is slotted as shown at 18 to receive and form a guide for a button 19 which is suitably secured to the lip stick,
being in section, showing the' this arrangement permitting the latter to be pushed out of its holder to present the tip thereof 'beyond the open end of the holder as will be readily understood.
The top oropen end of the tube'lG-is I notched as at 2() to receive the projecting end of the button 1S). This notch may be deep enough to permit the capped end of the holder 17 to extend flush with or below the top of the tube 16 but I prefer to allow the capped end to project out of the tube for a purpose that will presently appear. I
As already indicated there is preferably a pair of tubes 16 and they are conveniently arranged at the sides of the receptacle-part or box of the case. The lower and prefera bly closed end of the tubes 16 are pivotally secured to the box member of the case as by pintles 21 passing therethrough and through the outer and partition walls 22 and 23, respectively, of the box. The tubes may therefore swing upwardly inthe same direction as the cover in opening.
Means are provided for tilting the tubes about their pivots so as to raise the open' end of the tubes above the level of the box. These means preferably comprise in each instance a flat S-shaped spring 2-1 which at one end is fixedly secured to the tube 16 in front of the pivot thereof, the other end of the spring being slidably engaged with the bottom of the box. The tube at its free end presses upwardly upon the cover due tov holderl? to project out of the tube sufii ciently to contact with the cover or mirror thereof. This arrangement is desirable since 'advantage may then be'taken of the rounded end of the holder 17. -V I From the above it will be seen that l have provided a vanity case in which the cover will open as soon as the locking latch is released and that this arrangement is accomplished in a very simple and efficient manner. The spring which serves to elevate the cover also serves to raise the lip stick in such a manner that it may be easily grasped by the fingers and extracted from4 the tube. The whole arrangement offers a neat and compact vanity case which may be. manufactured at low cost. IVhile I have described the invention with great particularity, I desire it to beiunderstood that I intend no limitations other than those imposed by the appended claims.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
`l. In a vanity case having a pair of hinged members, a tube adapted to be received within one of said members, means pivotally securing said tube at one of its ends to said member, and resilient means reacting between said member and tube to tilt the latter about its pivot whereby to raise one` end of the tube above the level of the other end.`
2. In a vanity case, the combination with a pair of hinged members, of a tube adapted to lie within a compa-rtmentvin one -of said members, means pivotally securing t-he tube within said compartment on an axis parallel to the axis of the hinge of said members, al spring for tilting the tube about its pivot, the free end of said tube adapted to have sliding contact with the other member of the case whereby said member is swung open as the free end of the tube is elevated. vThe combination with arcontain'er having a cover hinged thereto, of a tube adapted to be received in the container, a pivot-al conneetion between one end of said tube and container, said connection being spaced from the cover hinge, and a spring on that side of the pivotal connection remote from the hinge reacting between the bottom of the container and the tube to tilt the latter in the same direction as the cover. is tilted in opening the same, the free end of said tube being slidably engaged with the cover whereby the latter is opened as the tube rises.
4. In a vanity case, the combination of a lip stick container, and means for pivotally Aconnecting one end of said containerto the box member of the vanity case,.said pivotal connection being remote from one end of said box, a cover for said box hinged to the same at the end adjacent said pivotal connection, aspring tending to turn the container about its pivot, said container pressing against the cover and tending to rock the same about its hinge, and means for sey curing the cover against movement.
5. In a vanity case,`the combination with a'lip stick container adapted to be received between two hinged members, means pivotally connecting one end of saidA container to one of s'aid members, the other end of said container adapted to have slidable engagement with the other of said members7 and a spring forcing the free end of said container toward the last-named member.
(S. In a vanity case, the combination with a box member having a plurality of compartments adapted to receive toilet articles, of a. tube, a. lip stick holder telescopically received within the tube, means pivotally connecting the tube to said box member, a spring'tending to elevate the tube above the level of the box to enable the lip stick holder to be readily withdrawn therefrom, a cover hinged to said box and adapted to be held in locked position with respect to the box membei', and means between the bottom of the box member and tube operating to elevatethe cover andtube in unison.
7. In a. vanity case having a pair of mem-V bers hinged together at one side of the case, a tube between the mi bers with the end thereof nearest the hinge pivotally connected with the case, and a spring interposed between and engageable with the tube and one of said members.
8. In a vanity case having a pair of members hinged together at one side of the case, a spring catch at theopposite side of the case, a tube between the members at right Aangles to the hinge with the end thereof nearest. the hinge pivotally connected with the case, and a spring interposed between and engageable with the tube and one of said members.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February. 1921.
