SPECIFICATION" forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,877, dated July 26, 1881,

Application filed May 26, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIO G. FORD, of Roxborough, in the county of Philadelphia, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have in-v vented certain new and useful Improvements in Gomb ined Spout and Strainer for Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,.clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in pails for liquids and other substances; and it has for its objects to provide an improved spout and strainer for such articles, which may be readily attached thereto, as desired, for the purposes of facilitating the pouring of the contents, separating any solid impurities therefrom during the operation of pouring, and to furnish a convenient means for filling narrow-mouthed vessels, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre 1 represents a perspective "iew of my improved pail, showing the spout of the same. The letter A indicates an ordinary wooden pail, which is formed at any suitable point on its edge'with a spout, B, in the material of which the body of the pail is constructed; or the said spout is formed of metal, preferably struck up with dies in the manner well known for shaping sheet metal to the'proper configuration. The said spout, at the edges which (Model.)

set against the sides of the pail, is provided with flanges 0, having suitable apertures, through which nails, screws, or other fastening devices may be inserted to secure the spout to the pail. The edge of the pail, where the detachable spout is secured, is out out at an angle, as indicated, so as to permit the contents to flow conveniently into and through the spout without spill- 1ng.

In the modification shown .in Fig. 3 of the drawingsthe flanges of the spout are shouldered, so that when the spout is secured to the pail an angular seat will be formed between said flanges and the outer wall of the pail for the reception of an angular strainer, D. (Shown iudetail in Fig. 7.) r

The letter E indicates a sheet-metal plate, adapted to be secured to the edge of the pail just back of the spout. The outer edge conforms to the curvature of the mouth of the pail, and is provided with a series of three downwardly-bent flanges, E F E, theflanges E E being adapted to set against the outside of the upper edge of the pail and the flange F against the outside upper edge of the strainer, located between the spout and the outer wall of the pail, forming a support for such edge of the strainer and assisting to hold it in place. The said plate E is provided within its outer edge with flanges or depressions G, which may be soldered on, or may be formed directly in the metal of the plate by the ordinary method of stamping. These flanges are designed to set into recesses formed in the edge of the pailat each side of the opening therein, and assist in holding the plate to its sea-t.

If desired, the flanges G may be made continuous across the plate, in which case it will form a back support for the strainer.

The flanges E E are provided with apertures H, through which nails or tacks or screws may be inserted to secure the parts to the pail. The ends of the flanges of the spout may be pointed and bent inward, so that they can be driven and secured without the use of nails, as indicated by the letter I.

The letter 1 indicates a strainer or filter-bag of textile material, which may be securedover the mouth of the spout by means of wire links K fastening into the eyes L in the screws M, which partly serve to hold the spent. The

strainers and plate E are removable, and may be employed or dispensed with at will, thus adapting the pail to be used as a simple receptacle or a straining and filtering device, as may be found convenient.

When required for filling bottles the strainer may be removed and the plate E secured in place. This will permit the contents to be readily discharged through the spout into the bottle, While the plate E will prevent all possibility of any overflow at the edge of the pail.

The joint at the flange and sides of the pail may be made tight by means of an interposed packing of rubber, felt, or other suitable material, or by means of cement, white lead, or other similar material, or by means of a coating ofpaint applied either on the inside or outside.

A great advantage of my improved spout and strainer is that the same may be applied at small expense to old pails or to the ordinary pails in the market.

It is evident that my improved spout may be applied with advantage to wash-tubs and other wooden vessels, and hence I do not limit myself to its application to pails simply.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In combination with a wooden pail having an angular recess at its edge, a metallic mouth-piece flanged, at its edges, and adapted to be secured to the pail by tacks or other suitable fastening devices, substantiallyas and for the purposes specified.

2. In combination with the bucket and mouthpiece, the plate E, provided with flan gcs E F, and G, and with suitable openings for tacks or other fastening devices, whereby the said plate may be secured to the bucket, substantially as specified.

3. In combination with the bucket and spout and the plate E, provided with flanges E F G, the detachable strainer D, the flange G serving to hold the upper edge of the strainer, substantially as specified.
