UNITED STATES Patented February 7, 1905.
CHARLES FAY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,019, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed August 3, 1904. Serial No. 219,278.
To all whom zit muy con/cern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES FAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a bottle-stopper of the type wherein thc stopper proper is carried by a bail operated b y a lever; and it consists of a metal cap or frame in which a thin layer of cork is secured, and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of the parts of such a stopper.
In the ordinary stopper, in which the metallic cap carries a rubber stopper and is connected to a bail operated by a lever, much dissatisfaction has been found, owing to the impairment of the taste and quality of the fluid in the bottle, due to the continuous use of the rubber stopper until the same has worn out. It has been suggested to replace the metallic cap and rubber stopper by a cap in which a removable layer of cork or similar innocuous material is placed; but it has been found that the removal and replacement of the cork in the cap has been impossible to perform manually unless great care and skill were exercised.
The object of my present invention is to provide in a bottle-stopper a metallic cap of inexpensive material and simple construction having a thin layer of cork in its interior, said cap being so secured to the bail of the stopper as that both the cap and cork may be readily removed from said bail and replaced by a new cap and cork when the bottle is to be refilled.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a side elevational view of a bottle-stopper embodying main features of my invention and illustratingthe stopper in closed position upon the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap of the stopper and of the bail, illustrating the two separated from each other.
Referring to the drawings, a. represents the lever, and the bail, of the bottle-stopper. To the bail b is detachably secured a cap (Z, of relatively thin and inexpensive metal and shallow in depth. 'Ihe interior of the cap (Z is filled out by a thin sheet or layer of Cork e.
The means for detachabl y securing' the metal cap Z to the bail consists in forming on the exterior of said cap (Z aclip f, of spring metal, one end of the clip being' either formed integral with the cap or else secured thereto. The other end of said clip has a projecting lip j", which when raised permits the entering or removal of the bail b into or from the clip f, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The sides L' of the bail b are arranged parallel with each other and at right angles to the top of the cap (Z. This insures a positive upandedown movement to the cap Z and the forcing of the layer e of cork tightly down uponthe top of the neck A of the bottle with but relatively little movement to the lever a of the stopper.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bottle-stopper a lever and a bail, in combination with a metal cap of shallow depth,
said cap having a clip of spring metal, one end of which is secured thereto and the free end having a projecting lip which when raised permits of the entering or removal of the bail into or from said clip, and a thin sheet of cork mounted in the under side of said cap, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. FAY. I'Vitnesses:
J. WALTER DoUGLAss, THOMAS INI. SMITH.
