Letters .Patent No. 64,436, dalcd lIay 7, 1367.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-SANS.
titte tlgcmle feierten tu in time @gittata ntmt mit mating pnt nf tige anni.
TO WI-IOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. McINEIRE, of the city of Chicago, in the county .of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The figure is a vertical section of an oil-can, with my improvements attached at the top.
The nature of my iiiventio'nconsists in providing the top of unyordinary oil or Huid-can with a funnel or funnel-shaped opening', C, at the top, and in providing such funnel with a spout, D. so as to bring -the spout above the neck of the can', 'and close both the lcan and the spout by a single cork or stopper.
To enable others skilled ini the art toy make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
vI construct the body of my'caus in any ot' theforms and sizes in ordinary use, and of any suitable material. The neck B is made of the usual size, or small enough for any ordinary cork-or stopper. To this I attach the'funnel C irmly, in order to lfacilitate filling the cans, and to prevent the escape of any part of. the ilnid or oil by the action of thc air in passing out, as is frequently the case with a loosely attached funnel. Near the upper edge of this funnel I attach the spout D, and over it, across the top oi' the funnel, I place a small piece of tin, E, 0r other suitable material, bringing its inner edge about on a line with the side of the ncck B, so asnot -to interfere with the operation of the stopper. This strip E is attac-hed to preventoverow when using the spout for filling lamps Aor otherwise. By this arrangement I am enabled to use a short spout, and also toclose the can and the spout by a single cork or stopper, and in this forni make a very desirable oil-can. Ihave also attached a Ventilating tube, F, for the purpose of passing air out when filling the can and passing it in when using the can for filling other vessels. This. tube can be cnt o` before reaching the funnel, or brought into it, as shown. In case the can is filled with very volatile fluids, this can also be corked or stopped. For ordinary purposes it can be omitted entirely. The handle Gr is attached as in ordinary cans, but in small ones is as well omitted as attached. l i
i Its operation will be obvious without a. description, audit will be seen that it makes a much better can than those now in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The narrow neck B, arranged relatively to the can A and side spout D,snbstantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The arrangement and combination of the narrow neck B, the funnel C, side yspout I), and vent-tube F, with the can A, substantially as set forth;
' JOHN S. McINTIRE. Witnesses.
