Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS PIMER, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY'HNV. PUTNAM, OF BENNINGTON, VERMONT.
lM PROVED BOTTLE-STOPPER.
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,589, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, THOMAS PIMER, of the city and county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers and Fasteners for Bottles 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters indicate similar parts throughout the gures.
My invention is particularly applicable to bottling such liquids as do not require to be bottled under pressure, but which do require that the corks or other Stoppers should be fastened down, from the fact that gases will be generated in the liquid after bottling, as in cider, Ste.
It consists ot' a combined stopper Iand fastener so affixed to the bottle that it can be latched down over the mouth of the bottle, firmly closing the same, and when unlatched can be readily removed from over the mouth, though remaining permanently attached to the bottle, to be again used when required.
`The construction and operation are as follows At a is a band or wire encircling the neck of the bottle `just below the bulge. To this is affixed an upright piece of metal on opposite sides, as b and c. These are secured to the band by pins, on which they can be turned readily. Over the top of the bottle is a 1netallie plate, d, to the lower side of which is attached a piece, c, of some elastic substance, as india-rubber, which 4will partly enter the neck of the bottle and close upon its mouth, as shown in Fig. l. The plate d has a wing at each side, by one of which it is hinged to the upright c, as shown, and by the other is held down by the upright b, the upper end of which is formed into a hook or latch, as seen in Fig. 2. When the bottle is to be opened the plate (l may be pressed against the month of the bottle, and the latch on I) can be readily withdrawn. The plate and stopper are then turned over on the hinge on c, and, if desired, may be turned down to the side of the neck by turning c on its pin.
It is worthy of particular notice that in my invention a large mass of the rubber or elastic material e is employed, and that the yielding of this is sufficient to allow my stopper to t on different bottles; and it is worthy of further notice that the mass of elastic material c on my stopper projects downward into and is adapted to t the mouth of the bottle, so that it may roll and apply itself with great facility to the different forms of the parts and to different lengths of the fastenin gs and the consequent different inclinations of the plate d.
I claim- The combination of the collar a, hook b, rigid cross-piece d, tapering mass of soft material e, and tie c, arran ged substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
THOMAS PIMER.
Witnesses J. P. PIRPON, S. H. MAYNMJD.
