F IG I llligl N PETERS, PHOTO-LITHQGRAFHER. WASHlNGYON. n C.
UNITED STATES CHARLES L. BELL, OF SALUDA, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR PREVENTING THE UNAUTHORIZED REMOVAL OF CORKS FROM BOTTLES, 8m.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
193,684., dated July 31, 1877 application filed July 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LANGLEY BELL, of Saluda, in the county of Middlesex and State of Virginia, have invented an Improved Device for Preventing the Unauthorized Removal of Corks and Stoppers from Bottles. Jars, &c., of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is containeda full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a device to be placed over a cork or stopper of a bottle, jar, or similar vessel, and locked around the neck of the same to prevent the withdrawal of the said cork or stopper by unauthorized persons.
In the description of the invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is an exterior view of a bottle-neck having the improved device attached thereto, the said device being shown in section. Fig. II is a side view of the .device on an enlarged scale, the same being shown open or extended. Fig. 111 is a plan of Fig. II.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the figures.
A A are semi-cylindrical shells hinged together, as shown, and provided at their lower edges with semicircular projections a, which projections, when the device is closed upon the neck of a bottle, fit around the same below the enlarged end thereof. The upper ends of the semi-cylindrical shells A are furnished withseinicircular heads I), to which the two parts or sections of the lock B are secured. This lock may be of any description fitted for the purpose, and, in order to cause the device to, open or extend upon being unlocked. one part of the said lock has a spring-bolt, 0, projecting therefrom, which is forced inward by the other section of the same when the device is closed.
A circular plate, O, fastened to one part of the lock, and below the same, serves to prevent any portion of the cork or stopper passing between the two parts of the lock in closing the device upon the bottle-neck.
This device is simple, in construction, and cheaply made, and it is found to fully answer the purpose for which it is intended.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and wish to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination, with the hinged semicircular shells A A, of the circular plate 0, semicircular projections a a, and heads I) b, each of said heads carrying a part of a locking despecified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22d day of June, in the year of our Lord 1877.
CHARLES LANGLEY BELL.
