Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,580, dated J une 3, 1873; application filed February 15, 1573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA T. JoNEs, of Clinton, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to certain improvements in fruit-jars; and it consists, first, in two recesses or depressions in the top flange of the jar, to receive lugs on the cover and prevent the cover from turning; second, in an opening in the top of the cover, closed by a removable plug or stopper, which also serves to secure the bar by which the cover is fastened to the jar.
I In the drawing, A represents a fruit-jar, made of any suitable material, and in form resembling those in ordinary use, having a flange, a, around the top for engagement with a curved bar pivoted to the cover and having its ends hooked, whereby the cover is fastened to the jar. A groove, 11, is formed around the top of the jar to receive the rubber packing-ring 0. Two recesses or depressions, d, are formed in the flange a, diametrically opposite to each other; these recesses receive two lugs, g, projecting downward from the cover B, so that when the cover is placed upon the jar it is prevented from turning; the recesses also receive the hooked ends f of the fastening-bar F in putting on the cover, before said bar is turned around to bring the hooks under the flange a. A groove, h, is formed around the edge of the cover, which fits over the rubber-packing ring 0, thus forming a tight joint. In the top of the cover B is a circular opening, which is closed by a plug or stopper, J on the lower end or pointof which is a button, j, which passes through a slot in the bottom of the circular opening and is then turned transversely of said slot so as to hold the plug in place. The plug J is surrounded by a rubber ring, t, which forms a tight joint between the plug and the opening in the cover. The fastening bar F has a circular opening in the center, which fits around a circular shoulder surrounding the hole in the top of the cover; the bar revolves around said circular shoulder, and the plug J prevents its displacement from the cover. 0n the top of the cover are two shoulders or projections l, opposite to each other and in line with the recesses 0?, so that when the fastening-bar is turned back to remove the cover, the shoulders larrest the ends f when they reach the recesses, and the cover can be readily removed. On the knob of the stopper J are notches or projections m, in line with the button j, to indicate the position of the button when the plug is in place, so as to enable the person using-the jar to fasten the stopper properly. What I claim as new, and desire to secure V by Letters Patent, is 1 1. The lugs g on the cover B, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the jar A, having the flange a, provided with the recesses or depressions d, the cover B, with the lugs g, and the bar E, with the hooked ends f,,substan tiall y as described. In a concave-convex cover for fruit-jars, the removable plug or stopper J having at its lower end the button j, which passes through a slot in the bottom of the circular opening in the cover B, adapted to be turned trans verse] y in said slot and hold the plug in place, as'specified.
4. Thefastening-bar F, having a circular central opening fitting around a shoulder in the top of the cover, and held in place by the means of the removableplug J, as shown and described. M
