Description

M. BLOCK.
consumo BoTTLE AND cur. No.183,890. Patented 0m31.187s.
WITNESSES .INVENTOR By /uw- 'Wm Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARX BLOCK, OF'CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BOTTLE AND CUP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. l 83.890, dated October 31, 1876; application tiled May 26, 1876.
To all. whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARX BLOCK, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton, and in the State 0f Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination of Bottle and Cup; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cup to go over the neck of a bottle, and in the means for fastening the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set f'orth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Eignre lis a perspective view, showing the cup detached fromthe bottle. Fig. 2 is a section of the parts in position.
A represents the neck of a bottle, provided at or near the base with two exterior circumferential flanges, a and b. In the upper flange a are two notches, :v directly opposite each other, as shown. B represents a cup of suitable size to t over the bottle-neck A, even when the cork or stopper C is inserted therein. On the inside of the cup B, at the edge, are two lugs, i t, opposite each other, which are of such size as to pass through the notches w m in the iiange c. Elastic packing d is placed on the flange b of the bottle, and when the cup is passed over the liange c the edge of the cup compresses this packing, so that when the cup is turned to bring the lugsi under the ange a the packing will hold the cup with sutcient firmness in its place.
This device has two main advantages. It locks the cork or stopper C in its place, and it preventsl any dirt from coming into the cup, and keeps the same clean.
The cup B may be used as a drinking-cup, when of suitable size for that purpose; and for medicine-bottles it may be used for giving the proper dose. To this end I propose to make them graduated.
0n the neck A and cup B are projecting pins c e, or suitable indicating-marks, to show when the lugs i are opposite the notches x, so as to facilitate the removal of the cup.
This invention is equally as well applicable to jars and covers, it desired, and I do, therefore, not limit myself to bottles in the application of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bottle A, provided with the iange b and notched flange a, the cup B, provided with interior lugs c' c', and the elastic packing d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of May, 1876.
MARX BLOCK.
