Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. WIL- LIAMSON and GEORGE E. CARoTHnRs, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Closures Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in bottles and closures therefor, and has for its object to so construct such devices that the closure or stopper may be locked in the bottle, thus holding it firmly against internal pressure.
A further object of our invention is to provide for the retention of the stopper with the bottle.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical sectional View of the neck of a bottle, illustrating one form of internal lug. Fig. 2, is a similar view of a slightly modified form of bottle neck with the stopper inserted. Fig. 8, is a section at the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a vertical sectional view of the neck of a bottle illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention; and Fig. 5, is a similar View showing the stopper open for the pouring out of the contents.
In carrying out our invention as here embodied 1 represents the bottle which may be of any shape and the upper portion of the neck of this bottle is depressed on each side forming the internal lugs 2.
3 represents the stopper which is prefei ably made of porcelain or may be made of glass or any other suitable material and consists on the head 4:, neck 5, shank 6 and locking bar 7.
Around the neck 5 is placed a cork or other suitable ring 8 for closing the mouth of the bottle as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The locking bar 7 is of such shape as to pass between the lugs, 2, when turned in the proper position and when turned at right angles to the entering position willpass beneath said lugs thus securelv locking the stopper in place.
To prevent the stopper from being withdrawn from the bottle we further provide the shank 6 with an integral circular flange or shoulder 9 above the locking bar as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
When the stopper is inserted in the neck of the bottle, internal lugs 10 are produced by heating and depressing the walls of the neck to such an extent that the shoulder 9, cannot be withdrawn past these lugs as will be readily understood.
The same effect may be had in the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, without reheating the bottle and in which the stop"- per has an extension, 11, formed with the lower end thereof on which is a foot, 12, upon which is placed a ring, 13, of cork or other suitable material. In this construction, when it is desired to open the bottle, the stopper is turned so that the locking bar,
7 may be passed between the internal lugs cost, the only additional cost is the cost of the stopper, and in practice this will be found to be less than the locking stoppers in use at the present time.
Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as shown herein as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims, without de parting from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, is
1. In combination with a bottle having lugs in the neck thereof, a stopper comprising a head, a neck, a 'locking bar and a foot, said locking bar adapted to co-act with either face of said lugs while the foot coacts with the lower faces of said lugs.
2. In combination with a bottle having lugs in the neck thereof, a stopper comprising a head, a neck, a locking bar and a foot, said locking bar and foot adapted to co-act with the lugs for locking the stopper in the neck of the bottle When corked and uncorked.
3. In combination with a bottle having lugs in the neck thereof, a stopper comprising a head, a neck, a locking bar, a foot and a flexible ring cooperating with said foot, said ring and locking bar co-acting with the lugs for locking the stopper in the neck of the bottle When corked and uncorked.
