MARMADUKE ANDERSON, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Applicatio fi October 22. 1907- Serial No. 398.661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARMADUKE ANDER- SON, Jr. of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Whichit appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide improved, simple and highly eflicient means whereby bottle stoppers, in the form of metallic caps, may be readily removed without the necessity of using sepa rate tools.
The invention comprises a plate located between a portion of the cap and the end of the bottle, and a stud which projects through and beyond the cap so that by forcing the studinwardly the plate will be turned as on a fulcrum and thereby dislodge the cap, and at the same time so deform the same as to prevent its reuse.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an external view, with a portion of the bottle broken away. Fi 2 is a cross sectional view. Fig. 3 is an inner face view of the cap with the plate in position. Fig. 4 is a View of the Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an -ordinary metallic cap which is secured to the bottle by crimping the circumferential depending flange in the manner well known in the art.
2 is a segmental plate which fits between a portion of the cap and the bottle. This plate is curved along its edge in conformity with the circular formation of the bottle end,
and at its center has a narrow extension 3 5 designates a segment of cork which fits between that portion of the cap and the end of the bottle not covered by the segmental plate.
In practice it is necessary to only bear inwardly on stud 4 to cause the plate to turn with its two opposite points 6 acting as fulcra, thereby causing the rounded portion of the plate to bear upwardly or outwardly against the cap and force the latter from the bottle. In this way the cap may be readily and easily removed, and in so doing the cap is bent or stretched to an extent that will prevent its being again applied to the bottle. Thus it will be seen that the cap may be readily removed by a single blow or pressure applied to the projecting stud, rendering thereby the use of separate tools unnecessary in order to dislodge the cap.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bottle stopper comprising a metallic cap designed to be secured to a bottle, and a prying element located between the cap and the bottle and having a portion projecting through and beyond the cap.
2. A bottle stopper comprising a metallic cap designed to be secured to a bottle, a plate located between a portion of the cap and the bottle, and a stud projecting from said plate through and beyond the cap.
3. A bottle stopper comprising a metallic cap designedto be secured to a bottle, a segmental plate fitted between a portion of the cap and the bottle and having an extension located over the opening in the bottle, and a stud extending from said extension through and beyond the cap.
4. A bottle stopper comprising a metallic cap designed to be secured to a bottle, a segmental plate fitted between a portion of the cap and the bottle and having a narrow extension located over the opening in the bottle, a stud extending from said extension through and beyond the cap, and a segment of cork between that portion of the cap and the bottle not occupied by the plate.
In testimony whereof,I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARMADUKE ANDERSON, JR.
