UNITED. STATES PATENT O FICE.
THOMAS. HOGAN AND PATRICK GRADY, OF ABILENE, TEXAS.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,803, dated. October 18, 1904.
Application filed August 12, 1903. Serial No. 169,250- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS HOGAN and PATRICK H. GRADY, citizens of the United States, residing at Abilene, in the county of Taylor and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, ofwhich the following is a specification.
' Our invention relatesto new and useful improvements in bottle-stoppers; and its object is to provide a cap which is adapted to be antomatically locked'in position upon the neck of the bottle and at a point above a cork or other suitable sealing device arranged within the neck.
A further object is to provide locking means within the cap, whichis of a peculiar. form, whereby the cap will be securely fastened to the bottle-neck.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of our invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a section through a bottle-neck, showing a cap locked in position thereon; and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the locking-spring,
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the neck of a bottle, the upper end of which is beveled, as shown at 2, and adjacent the inner end of the neck is a groove 3. The distance between this groove and the inner end of the bottle-neck is slightly greater than the thickness of a cork or other sealing device 4, which is arranged within the neck. A rectangular groove 6 is formed within the outer face of the neck, adjacent the outer end thereof, and is adapted to register with a similar groove 7, formed within the inner face of acap 8, closed at one end. Within this groove 7 is arranged a spring 9, which is substantially oval in form and the ends of which are enlarged, as shown at 10, and form inwardlyextending projections, which are directly opposite the tapered portion 11, formed within the spring. When in normal position within the groove 7 the depressed portion 11 -and the enlarged ends 10 of the spring project from the inner face ofthe cap 8. It is therefore obvious that when this cap is placed upon the neck 1 and pressed downward thereon the tapered end of the neck will force the projecting portions of the spring backward into the groove 7, where they will be helduntil said groove registers with the groove 6. Said portions of the spring will then immediately move into engagement with the groove 6 antomatically, and the cap will thus be securely fastened upon the neck and cannot be detached therefrom. When it is desired to remove the contents of the bottle, it is necessary to strike the cap upon some hard object,
so as to break the neck along the groove 3. The seal 4: will prevent the broken glass from falling in the bottle. It will be seen that the device is extremely simple in construction,
and it is absolutely impossible to remove the contents of the bottle unless the neck is first broken.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a device of the character described, the combination with a bottle having'a neck provided with a rectangular annular groove adjacent one end; of a cap adapted to receive and close the neck and to extend. over the groove, said cap having a rectangular annular groove in its inner face adapted to register with the groove in the neck, and a securing device seated within the groove in the cap and comprising oppositely-arranged springbows having inwardly-extending enlarged ends spaced apart, and an inwardly-extending curved portion connecting the bow-shaped portions, said bow-shaped portions being In testimony whereof \voafiix our signatures seated at all times Within the groove in the in presence of two Witnesses.
cap and adapted to partly inclose the bottle- THOMAS HOGAN. neck, and the intermediate portion and the PATRICK H. (iltAlN. enlarged ends being adapted to automatically \Vitnesses:
project into the groove in the bottle-neck and C. LAMBETH, lock the cap upon said neck. J. \V. DISHMAN.
