NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

To all vri/om t may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN B. BENNETT, citizen of the United States, residing at Feermont, in the county'of Cape May and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Non-Re fillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis invention, a non-reillable bottle, is designed for the obvious purpose of precluding the fraudulent reuse of a bottle subsequent to thedispensation of its original and genuine contents.
The objects of the invention will become manifest as the description proceeds.
1n describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which i* Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the neck portion of a bottle illustrating the non-l'ellable feature of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the locking band or ring.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the bottle neck, 2 the bottle, and 3, as an entirety, the sealing cap. As shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the bottle neck 1 is exteriorly threaded as indicated at point intermediate the bottle neck terminals, that portion of the bottle neck above the screw threads 4 being somewhat smaller in diameter and somewhat tapered as indicated at 5 to facilitate the arrangement of the sealing cap thereover. An annular recess 6 is formed in the bottle neck 1 directly above the threaded portion thereof, ribs 7 the purpose of which will subsequently appear being adapted to extend across the recess or longitudinally of the bottle neck, the several ribs being in uniform spaced relation whereby to form a plurality of shoulders or abutment surfaces.
The sealing cap 3 is provided with a longitudinal bore or recess 8, threaded as indicated at 9 to receive the threaded portion of the bottle neck 1 and that portion of the bottle neck thereabove. Directly above the screw threads 9 of the sealing cap, and in lateral alinement with the recess 6 of the bottleneck when the cap 3 is finally arranged 4 preferably at al thereover, I provide an annular groove or recess 10, enlarged at diametrically opposite points as indicated at 11 and 12 respectively, said recess being adapted to receive a retaining or locking band or ring designated as an entirety by the numeral 13. The ring or band 13 is preferably formed or constructed of a resilient material in order that it may be sprung into place and there held by its engagement with the recess walls and by the engagement of thelugs 14 and 15 respectively with the walls of the enlarged recess portions 11 and 12. The enlarged portion 11 of the recess 10 is of a size permitting contraction of the band 13 in the application of the sealing cap. Locking tongues 16 are struck inwardly from the band or ring, the several tongues being disposed in uniform spaced relation, to engage, in the final position of the sealing cap 3 the shoulders formed by the ribs 7 aforesaid.
The lock mechanism made possible by the cooperation of the band 13 and the ribs 7, being entirely housed when the bottle cap 3 is in place, it is evident that said mechanism can under no circumstances be tampered with or unlocked. In order that the sealing cap be made liquid tight, a washer 17 is interposed between the top of the bottleneck 1 and the closed end of the bore 8, the said washer being' held in place by screwing the cap 3 tightlT with respect to the neck. Said cap 3 is provided with an integral elongated extension or neck 18 which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with a concentric bore 19 which, as shown, is in registration with the bore of the` bottle neck 1. The bore 19 is constricted throughout a portion of its length, and is adapted to receive a plug or stopper 20, said plug or stopper being fitted or positioned prior to the arrangement of the cap 3 upon the bottle. A vent opening 21 is formed in the neck 18 of the cap in order that the arrangement of the stopper 20 in the bore 19 thereof may be in no way hampered or impeded. The neck 18 of the cap is weakened as indicated at 22 in order that the top portion of the said neck may be broken ofl to expose the stopper 22 when it is desired that the contents of the bottle 2 be dispensed. It is only by thus mutilating or breaking the cap 3 that access may be had to the bottle contents.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is evident that the contents of the bottle can under vthat the conditions concurrent no circumstances come in contact with the metal or resilient locking band; that the bottle can under no circumstances be refilled without making such refilling quite apparent; and that the cap 3 when once screwed into place can under no circumstances be removed without breaking or mutilating the neck of the bottle.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, Y proportion and arrangement of parts may tion, what eure by positively lockV the cap against removal.

2. A non-refillable bottle including an eX- teriorly threaded neck portion provided with longitudinal radial ribs, a sealing cap adapted to be arranged over the.v neck and to engage the threads thereof, a breakable cap extension integral with the cap, the said yextension being provided with a closed end longitudinal bore open to the bore of the bottle neck, and means arranged upon the interior of the cap and engageable with the ribs tov automatically y lock the said cap against removal from'the neck, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A non-reiillable bott-le including an exteriorly threaded neck portion provided with a plurality of radial abutting surfaces, a breakable sea-ling cap' adapted to be arranged over the said bottle neck and to enthe threads thereof, and a locking band or ring carried by the said cap and arranged upon the interior thereof,.said band or ring being engageable with the abutting surfaces of the bottle neck to lock the cap against removal when screwed in place, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A non-reiillable bottle including an exteriorly threaded neck portion provided with exterior radial .abut-ting surfaces, a sealing cap adapted to be threaded on the bottle neck, a locking band fastened to the Copies of this patentmay be obtained for ve cents cap .upon the interior thereof, locking tongues extending inwardly from the said band, the said tongues being adapted for engagement with the abutting surfaces of the neck to automatically lock the cap against removal therefrom when screwed thereon, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A non-refillable bottle including an eX- teriorly threaded neck portion provided with longitudinal radial abutting surfaces, a sealing cap adapted to be arranged over the said bottle neck and to engage the threads thereof, an extension integral with the sealing cap, the'said extension being provided with a longitudinal closed end bore open to the bore of the bottle neck, the said extension being breakable and constrieted at a point intermediate its ends, a locking band arranged upon the interior of the sealing cap, means to lock the band against turning movement within the cap, and a plurality of locking tongues struck inwardlyT from the band to engage the abutting surfaces aforesaid, the said tongues being adapted to lock the sealing cap against removal when screwed on the bottle neck, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. A non-refillable bottle including an exteriorly threaded neck portion having an annular series of longitudinal ribs radiating therefrom, a frangible cap'threaded on said neck portion and provided with diametrieally opposed interiorly located recesses, a resilient band provided with a plurality of instruck locking tongues adapted for engagement with said ribs to lock said cap upon said neck portion, and lock means for and integral' with said band adapted for it ting engagement with said recesses, substantially as described.
7. A non-refillable bottle including a neck portion having an annular series of longitudinal ribs radiating therefrom, a cap mounted to engage with the outside surface of said neck portion to provide a closure means therefor, said cap having interior diametrieally opposed recesses formed therein, a divided expansible band having an enlargement formed at each end thereof and at a point equidistant from its ends, said enlargements being adapted for fitting engagement within the recesses aforesaid,
and aplurality of instruck tongues formed upon said band to engage with said ribs and lock said cap against removal from the neck portion, substantially as described.
