WILLIAM D. WHEAT, OF JAMESTOWN, KENTUCKY, ASSIGN OR OF ONEIIALF TO ELMER WHEAT, OF JAMESTOWN, KENTUCKY.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed February 2, 1907. Serial No. 355,470.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. WHEAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Russell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved bottle stopper designed particularly for beer bottles or other bottles that contain liquids under pressure, and the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts of a simple and cheap stopper of this character which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed outin'the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle neck provided with the improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved stopper; and, Fig. 3 is a per spective view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters;
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bottle neck which is rovided at its mouth with two diametrica ly opposite overhanging lugs 2 that may be formed integral with the bottle neck, or on a metal or glass (preferably the latter) stopper tube, which is adapted to be fitted within the ordinary bottle neck and cemented or otherwise permanently held therein.
3 designates the corkwhichis adapted to fit within the mouth, as shown, to lie with its upper face in a lower plane than the lower sides of the lugs 2.
4 designates a cork screw which is prefer- I ably formed of a single length of wire bent at one extremity into spiral or screw form and thence bent into the form of a loop handle, and thence bent outwardly in opposite directions and doubled upon itself to form the oppositely extending arms 6, the other extremity of the wire being then hooked around as indicated at 7.
In the practical use of my improved bottle stopper, the cork or other stopper is seated down within the mouth below the overhang ing lugs 2 with the cork screw 4 applied and the latter is turned until its arms 6 take underneath the lugs 2, thereby securely locking the cork in the bottle mouth, as against the internal pressure.
Whenever it is desired to remove the cork, it is only necessary to give the cork screw a slight turn until its arms are released from the lugs 2, whereupon the cork may manifestly be readily removed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable and eflicient form of bottle stopper, which may be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to seal the contents of beer bottles, or other bottles containing liquids under pressure. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a bottle provided in its mouth with overhanging lugs, of a cork inserted in said mouth below said lugs, a cork screw inserted in said cork, and provided with oppositely extending arms adapted to take under said lugs, whereby to lock the cork in the bottle mouth, and a handle embodied in said cork screw whereby said arms may be turned out. of engagement with said lugs to withdraw the cork, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a bottle provided in its mouth with overhanging lugs, of a cork inserted in said mouth, a cork screw inserted in said cork and consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop handle and thence bent outwardly therefrom and doubled upon itself whereby to form two oppositely exitending arms adapted to extend under said ugs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAIVI D. WHEAT.
Witnesses:
KATE SIMPSON, C. A. HAMMoNDs.
