IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,803, dated May 4, 1875; application filed December 19, 1b74.
To all whom it may concern:
State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to new and useful improvement in stoppers for bottles; and consists in the construction of the same, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a bottle having my improved stopper attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1, taken on the line w 00. Fig. 3 is a view of the hook detached, which is applied to hold the stopper down when the bottle contains effervescin g liquids, or for other purposes.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bottle, which may be of any form or size, and used for any purpose, either for containing liquors in saloons, or catsup, or pepper-sauce, or other article on the table. B is a band around the neck of the bottle, which carries a little clevis, O. This-clevis is pivoted to the hand, so that it may work up and down, but that is not an essential feature. D is a bent lever, attached to the jaws of the clevis by the fulcrum-pin E. This lever curves up over the top of the bottle, and is attached to the stopper F. This stopper has a flange, G, around it, which iucloses a packing, H, which packing is made of rubber or other elastic material, and is made to tightly fit onto the top of the bottle. I is a spring fastened to the lever, the upper end of which bears with a constant pressure against the lug J,
which is fastened between the jaws of the clevis O. The spring may bear against the clevis without the lug, if desired. The effect of the spring is to throw the lower end of the lever outward, and the lever, being curved or bent to about a right angle, to bear the stopper F downward to close the bottle.
When a person takes hold of the bottle he hears with his thumb on the lower end of the lever, which action raises the stopper, and allows the contents to flow out when the bottle is tipped.
K is a hook which is attached to the eye L on the under side of the lever, and hooks under the clevis to hold the stopper down. This hook is not an indispensable feature, as it will seldom be used, except for soda-water or similar effervescin li uids. Lis aclam) )ivoted to the band B, having a screw, M. This clamp is turned up over the bottle, so that the screw may be turned down onto the stopper F, for
securely fastening down the stopper when the bottle contains champagne or other effervescing liquids.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The band B, clevis O, lever D, stopper F, and spring I, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the lever D, stopper F, the holding-hook K, for the purposes described, and also the clamp L, as set forth.
