Description
J. K. CHASE. Screw-Cap and Stopper-Fastener.
No.'2os,o10j. Patentedse mzlms.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN K. CHASE, ()F NE? YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-CAP AND STOPP ER-FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,010, dated September 17, 1878; application filed August 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN K. CHASE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Cap and Stopper for Bottles, Jars, 820.; and that the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and accurate description of the same.
In the drawings, Figure I represents a vertical central section, having the stopper inserted into the mouth of a bottle. Fig. II is a plan or top view thereof. Fig. III is a similar View when the stopper is removed. Fig. 1V is a side view of the screw-cap.
The object of my invention is to. make an improved stopper and screw-cap combined that will be perfectly air-tight and always ready for use.
The nature of my invention consists of a screw-cap, 13, made of zinc, tin, or other suitable material, formed with a screw-thread on its inner surface, so as to fit into a corresponding screw-thread cut on the neck A of the bottle or jar to which the screw-cap B is to be applied. Attached to the side of the screw-cap B is a piece of wire of requisite strength, the upper end of which forms a loop, a, in which the stopper-supporting plate 0 is hinged. (See Figs. I, II, and III.) This stopper-supporting plate 0 has a hook, I), which hooks into the lip c, that is soldered or otherwise secured to the screw-cap B.
The stopper D is made of cork, wood, or other suitable material, and is fastened to stopper-supporting plate (J by means of the screw (1. In the center and top of the stopper-support ing plate 0 is a slot, 0, which is for the purpose of allowing the stopper-supporting plate 0 to move while the stopper D remains still in its place.
At the top and inside of the screw-cap B is a packing-ring, E, made of rubber or other suitable material, used as a bearing for the stopper D to rest on, and making the bottle or jar perfectly air-tight. (See Fig. I.) My improvement is especially adapted for attachments to bottles containing ale, beer, mineral waters and other eftervescing liquids, and also for fruit-jars, as it is perfectly airtight and ready for use.
The bottles or jars supplied with my invention are easily and readily opened by pressing the hook I), which releases it from the lip c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- The combination, with the screw-cap B, having lip c, stopperD, and gasket-ring E, of stopper-supporting plate G, with its slot 6, loop a, and hook I), all substantially as arranged, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of August, A D. 1878.
JOHN K. CHASE. In presence of- LOUIS W. FRosT, EDGAR J. PHILLIPS.
