W. STEWART.
BOTTLE STOPPER'.
Patent ed June 16, 1885.
WITNESSES INVENTOR BY JAM/Mug ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICE.
VILLTAM STINVART, OF BROOKLYN, NICK" YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SBPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,189, dated June 16,1885.
Application liled January :0, 1885.
T 0 all whom, if may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM STE\VART, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of Xew York, have invented a -new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my improved bottle-stoppers shown as applied to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same taken through the line x 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle-stoppers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as
hereinafter fully described, and pointed out.
in the claim.
A represents an ordinary bottle, into the mouth of which. is fitted a tubular packing or bushing, B, having around its upper end a flange to rest upon the edge of the mouth of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner surface of the inner end of the packing B is flared or beveled to form a seat for the ball 0, placed within the bottle A. The ball 0 can be made of cork, hollow metal that will not corrode, or plated with a non-corrosive metal, or of other material not affected by moisture or acid. The ball 0 must be of such a buoyancy that it will readily float upon the liquid contained in the bottle. The packing B is held from being forced out of place by outward pressure from the contents of the bottle by an annular cap, D, placed upon the flanged outer end of the packing B and having three (more or less) arms, E, formed upon or at- 40 tached to its outer edge.
The arms E are so (No model.)
formed or bent as to extend along the neck of the bottle, and are seen red to the said neck by a wire, F, passed around the said arms and neck, and around which the said arms are bent, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The improvement is designed to be used in bottling soda-water and other liquids generating gases, and thus producing an outward pressure.
In using the improvement the ball 0 is placed in the bottle, and the packing B is inserted in the mouth of the said bottle and secured in place by the cap I) E and the wire F. Then as the bottle is filled the ball 0 rises with the liquid until it comes to its seat in thelower end of the packing B, whereit is held in place by the outward pressure of the contents of the bottle. Vhen the bottle is to be emptied, it is held in a horizontal or inclined position and the ball 0 is pushed from its seat by means of r a rod or other suitable implement and at once rises through the liquid to the highest part of the said bottle, and thus allows the contents of the bottle to flow out freely.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Theherein-described bottle-stopper,consisting of the tubular packing B, provided with a flanged outer end and having the inner surface of its inner end beveled and flared, the ball-float O, the fastening-wire, and the metal cap provided with the arms E, adapted to have their ends bent around the said fastening-wire, as set forth.
