HENRY E. "WRIGHT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
'CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,264, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed September 10, 1888. Serial No. 285,022. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. .VRIGHT, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cans, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel sealing device for cans and similar vessels or receptacles, my invention being herein shown as applied to a metallic can having a metallic stopper or cover, and especially adapted to be used as a 1nilk-can.
Prior to my invention cans for milk and other fluids have been commonlyprovided with a stopper or cover of wood, cork, or other similar material not attached to the said can. The wooden or other stopper or cover, not being connected to the can, frequently becomes mislaid and lost, which is oftentimes a great annoyance.
It is the object of this invention to provide milk and other cans with means, as will be described, by which the stopper or cover is permanently attached to the can when the latter is uncovered, and by which the said stopper or cover, when in place to close the can, is locked thereto and prevented from becoming accidentally dislodged therefrom, the said stopper or cover being practically sealed or so fitted into the mouth of the can as to render the same liquid-tight.
My invention therefore consists, essentially, in the combination, with a can provided with a lip or rim and a handle and a stopper or cover therefor provided with a loop, of an arm bent to form a ring to encircle said handle and also to pass through said loop, the arm extending substantially across the stopper when in position to close the can and provided at its end with a finger or hook to engage said rim to lock the stopper in operative position, substantially as will be described.
Figure l is a side elevation of one form of can embodying my invention, the position of the stopper or coverwhen the can is open or uncovered being indicated by dotted lines, the can being broken out to show the rubber band about the stopper; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the can shown in Fig. 1.
The can a, preferably of metal, provided with the handle a and rim or lip a may be of any desired or usual construction. The can a is preferably provided with a metallic cover or stopperb, adapted to close the mouth of the said can, the said cover when made of metal or similar material being provided with a band or ring I), of rubber or like packing material, by which a tight joint is effected when the stopper or cover is secured in place to close the can.
The cover I), as herein shown, is permanently attached to the can by an arm or rod b bent, as at W, to form a ring, which encircles the handle of the can, the said ring also passing through a loop or band Z2 attached to or forming part of the cover or stopper.
The arm or rod 0 is made of sufficient length to extend substantially across the cover or stopper when the latter is in position to close the can, as shown in full lines in the drawings, and is provided at its end with a finger or hook 1), adapted to engage the lip or rim a of the can to lock the stopper or cover in its closed position until positively moved by hand.
As shown in the drawings, the cover or stopper is locked in position, and if it is desired to remove the said cover or stopper the arm or red I) is moved sidewise to disengage the finger or hook from the lip or rim, the cover occupying substantially the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1.
I have herein specifically described the cover or stopper as made of metal; but I do not desire to limit myself to the use of a metallic stopper, as the same may be made of wood or glass or like material, the loop or hand If being driven or sealed into the said stopper.
I claim- The combination, with a can provided with a lip or rim and a handle and a stopper or cover therefor provided with a loop 5 of an arm bent to form a ring to encircle said han- In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name die and also to pass through said loop, the to this specification in the presence of two sub- IO arm extending substantially across the stopscribing Witnesses. per or cover when in position to close the 7 T can and provided at its end with a finger or HENRX VRIGH hook to engage said rim to lock said stopper Witnesses:
in operative position, substantially as de- JAs. H. CHURCHILL,
