Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March'3, 1916. Serial No. 81,780.
ers or cans having a nozzle about which the spout may be fixed either by the packer or user. It will however be understood that the invention has other advantages which render it capable of effective and eflicient use when it forms a permanent part of the 'nozzle itself.
A further objectv of this, invention is the provision of a spout which, when positioned upon a container, will permit fracturing of a seal located withln a nozzle or a nozzle part of the spout and which will be normallycovered or closed except for the presefince of the ordinary spout or pouring ori- A- further object of the invention is the provision of a spout which may be positioned upon a nozzle and which will insure a smooth pouring action without any-danger of leakage through the connection between the spout and nozzle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container provided with a spout embodying my invention;
Fig. 2'is a vertical section through the same; i
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of said spout separated from the nozzle to which it is to be attached; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective. View of the main.
tion I have shown on the drawing a container A having a nozzle B upon which is positioned a spout C embodying my present invention. v
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it willbe noted that the container comp-rises a body 6 of any preferred construction having a nozzle opening v7 in its upper face in which is secured the nozzle B by a seam 8 of any desired form. The nozzle Bin the present in stance is of cylindrical form and is provided just beneath its top with an inwardly extending collapsed head 9 upon which seats a frangible seal or closure 10, which seal or closure is heldin place by the upper edge the outer face of the nozzle and carries a reinforcing bead 15 at its bottom.- A lip 16 formed on a slightly smaller-radius than the cylindrical part 14, extends into the opening at the front of the body, and this lip is curled upwardly and arcuately at 17 to embrace the curled edge 11 of the nozzle. The free edge of thlip extends clownwardly within the nozzle in tight metal to metal engagement with the curled edge to prevent leakage ofthe contents in pouring. The lower part of the spout proper extends outwardly from the bend 17 and tapers to a small semi-circular opening orlend 18. The edges 19 of the spout proper slope downwardly toward the rear.
The upper part or sliding slip cover 13 consists of a sheet of metalof general superficial form approximating the opening into the lower part 12 of the spout. Its- 'for subsequent attachment, as desired. Also the spout *may be turned around on the nozzle so as not to project beyond the sides of the can, the depressions 23 sliding in the bead 9 as the spout is turned.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and
it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages,
the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
1. Apouring spout adapted for attachment to a nozzle and having a body for embracing said nozzle, and a lip insertible within the nozzle at the spout side of said body.
said part 2. A pouring spout adapted for attachment to a nozzle and having a part disposed within the nozzle and engaging the inner side of the same and a depending neck disposed about said nozzle and parallel with which is disposed within the nozzle. e
3. A pouring spout having a body open at itstop and extending at one side to form the under part of the spout and a sliding slip cover having its edges bent to embrace the lower spout part under the same and being flanged to engage about the body opposite said spout part, said slip cover being held from longitudinal movement by said bent edgesand flange, and being slidable and removable when its flanged part has been lifted.
i. A pouring spout adapted for attachment to a nozzle, formed with a lateral spout portion, a depending flange adapted to em brace the exterior of such nozzle, and a depending lip arranged at the inner end of the lateral spout portion and adapted to be inserted within such nozzle.
5. The combination of a nozzle, a removable pouring spout having a flange at its rear part which engagesthe exterior of the nozzle at one side and is cut away at the other side of the nozzle, and having a lip at the front part of the nozzle in line with the pouring extension of the spout and engaging within the nozzle.
. 6. The combination of a nozzle and a pouring spout, said spouthaving a curved vertical flange which engages the nozzle exteriorly and a 'lip which engages the nozzle interiorly.
7. The combination of a nozzle having a depression on its exterior, and a removable spout having a yieldable cylindrical flange which engages the periphery of the nozzle, a portion of said flange being cut away, said flange having an inward projection adapted to snap intosaid depression of the nozzle and to be held removable therein by said yieldable flange.
'8. A combined nozzle and pouring spout, the spout portion extending laterally from the upper part of the device, a frangible seal fixed inQthe nozzle portion of the device accessible through the top of the nozzle and spout portions when the latter are open, and a nozzle and spout cover having flanges at its pouring; extremity which externally and slidingly engage around and under said spout portion and having a vertical-flange at its rear end which slidingly engages the exterior of said nozzle portion after the cover has been engaged under the spout portion and slid rearwardly, said cover being removable to give direct access to the top of said frangible seal, and said spout being removably attachable to the nozzle.
cal flange at its rear end which'slidingly engages the exterior of said nozzle portion after the cover has been engaged'under the spout portion and slid rearwardly, said spout being removably attachable to thev nozzle.
