BLISS THIBEDEAU, OF MONOTON, CANADA.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,542, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed December 28, 1896. erial No. 617,207. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BLIss THIBEDEAU, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a bottle and devices for sealing the same, the object being to provide a construction whereby the opening of the bottle will place it in such a condition that it cannot be reused without detection.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the parts in the position they assume when the bottle is sealed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bottle without the sealing-cap in place. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the sealing-cap.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the bottle, and 2 the neck thereof. In their general contour these parts are of ordinary construction, with the exception, however, that the bodyport-ion and neck are provided at one side with a seat 3, that extends from the upper portion of the neck to about the middle portion of the body. This seat is recessed or sunk into the glass and is provided at its lower end with a downward extension at at the rear wall thereof. At the upper end of the seat 3 is a transverse notch 4. Above the upper end of the seat the said bottle is provided with an opening 5, while above said opening is an upright groove 6. The seal of this bottle consists of a shield 7, provided at its upper end with a cap 8. The said shield 7 fits within the seat 3 and is provided at its lower end with a lip 9 to enter the extension l of said seat. The said cap 8 fits snugly over the upper end of the neck 2 and is provided interiorly at a point opposite the groove 6 with an upright groove 10. Between the cap and the shield 7 is a frangible or thinned portion 11, that is situated opposite the notch 4c in the neck.
In use the bottle is sealed and corked in the ordinary manner, and then I employ a spring 12, having a lateral sharpened extension 13, that is passed through the opening 5 of the neck and into the cork. The main portion of the spring lies in grooved of the neck of the bottle. The seal 7 is then placed in position with thelower portion fittinginto the seat and the cap upon the neck of the bottle, and it is noted that when the grooves 6 and 10 stand opposite each other the sides of the spring expand, and passing into these portions, serve to securely lock the same against removal. It is obvious that the shield cannotbe removed when secured in this manner, and a suitable key or other instrument is inserted in the neck and the said shield broken at the frangible portion, and since the groove 10 extends downwardly to the frangible portion it is obvious that the cap can be removed as well as the shield.
It is intended that the name and trade mark of the goods shall be placed upon the shield, and it is seen, therefore, that when the bottle is opened this trade-mark is removed, and that consequently the bottle cannot be refilled by unauthorized persons and thus deceive the public into believing they are buying the original goods.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a bottle having a seat in the body portion thereof, of a seal consisting of a cap to receive the end of the neck and a shield to enter said seat, said shield having a frangible portion, and locking devices between said seal and bottle.
2. The combination with a bottle havinga seat, an exterior groove, and an opening in the neck thereof, of a seal consisting of a cap having an interior groove, a shield to enter said seat, and a spring situated between the cap and .neck and provided with a bent end passing through said opening and into the body of the bottle.
3. The combination with a bottle having a seat extending along the neck and body portion of the same and provided with an. extension at its lower end, of a seal consisting of a cap to receive the end of the neck and a shield to enter said seat, a lip at the lower end of said shield to enter said extension, said shield being provided with a frangible portion, and locking devices between said seal and bottle.
4. The combination with a bottle having a seat in the body portion thereof, a notch at the upper end of said seat, of a seal consisting of a cap to receive the end of the neck, and a shield tov enter said seat, said shield having a frangible portion opposite said notch, and locking devices between said seal and bottle.
5. The combination with a bottle having a recess, an exterior groove in the neck thereof, and an opening at the lower end of said groove, of a seal consisting of a cap and a shield, a frangible portion at the base of said cap, and interior grooves in said cap extending upwardly from said frangible portion, said grooves of the bottle and cap being situated opposite each other, and a spring sitnated within said grooves and having an extension-passing through the said opening of the bottle.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of. two subscribing witnesses.
BLISS TIIIBEDEAU.
