De it known that I, Cnantus II. Ponrun, of Albany, in thescounty of Albany, and State of New York, have invented n new and useful improvement in the Corking of Bottlesg" and I do hereby d eclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same,rrcfcrence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,

' With bottles, more particularly those filled with soda-watcr-and othereffervescent liquids, the corks are usually expelled from the bottles hy the action of such liquids when the holding-loop employed was turned aside, or the wire or other fastening cut, thc corks thus expelled being in a great proportion lost (although still serviceable if'their loss in such a. manner could be preventeth) whereby a large expense for corks was incurred hy the manufacturers of soda-water, dic.

The object ofthe present invention is to prevent the waste ot' corks from the cause hereinabovel stated; and for that purpose it consists principally in so securing-thc cork in the bottle that when the cork is expelled from its mouthit willstill remain attached thereto, and furthermore, so that the cork may be readily detached from the bottle, offering no impediment to the corking or re-corking of the bottle by the machinery in common use forthat purpose, or by hand. i

The invention consists, irst, in the use of one or more wires or hands of metal or other suitable material, of such shape that they can he rmly connected with the cork by inserting it into or through the same,` and furnished with an eye or loop at the cuter end of `the cork, to receive a chain wire or band, or a combination of them, formed'of metal or other material, which, at one end, is provided with a spring or catch suitable for being inter-locked with the eye or loop before mentioned, and at its other is hung to a wire or band fastened i around the neck of the bottle.

In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in the corking of bottles is illustrated, the figure4 being an elevation of a. b ottle having a cork secured to it according to my invention, and shown in vertical section.

A, in the drawings, represents a bottle; B its mouth, having a cork, C, driven into it. In this cork C a. spiral-shaped wire, D, is secured by screwing it into thesame at its upper end toward the lower, the outer end of this wire being provided with a. loop or eye, E. F, a springcatcli hung on one'cnd of a chain, G, which, at its other end, is hung to a metallic wire or band, II, secured around the outside of the neck of the'bottle. I,

From the above description it is plain to be understood that the cork is secured or hung to the bottle in such manner that while it can be driven into or removed from the bottle with the utmost ease, and can be corked or re-corked without impediment by the machines ordinarily used for such purposes, when the fastening which holds the cork in the bottle is lswung oli', if a loop fastening, or cut it' a wire or cord, the cork, although expelled from the bottle by thc action of the gases in the bottle, cannot be lost, as the chain limits the extent to which it can be thus thrown, as is obvious without any further explanation. 'By opening the spring-catch the cork can be detached from the chain.

Ido not claim broadly a screw permanently attached to corks, as I am aware that it has been used before; but what I do` claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A. screwA furnished with an eye or loop at one end, when such screw is inserted in a cork, substantially as and for the purpose described. I

I also claim, in combination with the above, a. chain having a spring-catch, or their respective equivalents, and hung to the neck of a bottle, substantially as described for the purpose-specified.
