JAR-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 758,515, dated April 26, 1904. Applicatioafiled June 1, 1903. Serial No. 159,398. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. FENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in J ar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing and sealing jars, bottles and other like vessels, and particularly to the kind of jars used for preserving fruits etc., requiring an easily removable seal. Its objects are to provide a closure which avoids any contact of metallic parts with the contents of the jar, to provide for the use of a glass or non-metallic cap, to provide means for inducing differential pressure upon the packing 0r seal and a closure easy of manipulation and accurate in its working, and without liability .of getting stuck in place.
In order to gain the above objects, as well as to. make the jar cap convenientlyin a press mold, and to gain other advantages, I use the structure as illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein,.
Figure l is a view of the-metallic attaching strap; Figure 2 is a cross section of the cap, and Figure 3 of the upper part of the neck and jar, as designed to use my invention.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the cap and strap as joined together on the jar. showing the neck of the latter in side elevati0n,with the form of the differential threads I prefer. Figure 5 shows a blank for the metallic strap.
In carrying out my invention I provide upon the neck of the jar a a pair of oppositely disposed slanting threads 0, which are interrupted by spaces d at two opposite points. The cap of the jar is provided with an annular groove and with a depressed central portion to fit inside the mouth of the jar. To retain the cap I use the metallic strap g, which is jecting studs h are to take under the threads v sidewise turn they draw the cap down upon the packing m as shown in Figure 4.
By this means I avoid any contact of metal with the contents of the jar and need to use only the very small packing ring m, and the, cap itself may be made entirely of glass. The device is tightened in place by the maximum of a half turnof the strap or the cap of the jar, and is very conveniently released from place. all as will be evident from the drawing. The cap and the retaining strap are securely attached together and do not come apart when the cap is removed, so that for all practical purposes of handling they are as one piece, while the strap is of very cheap and convenient form and the cap may be easily made by pressing in molds.- The simplicity and ease of operation of the device will readily occur to those familiar with its use.
While the form of the metallic strap is not an essential part of the invention, I prefer to make it of sheet steel, and it may conveniently be made by cutting from ablank as shown in Figure 5, the lugs being bent in at right angles to the face of the strap, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent, is-the following:
,1. In a jar closure the combination with the neck having threads thereon, of a glass cap having a depressed center and a groove for carrying packing, and a metal strap provided with a depressed portion engaging the top of the cap, inturned spurs to hold the strap on the cap, and depending studs arranged to engage the threads of the neck.
2. In a jar closure the combination of a neck provided with oppositely disposed partial threads with an open space between their ends, of a glass cap provided with a central depressed portion, an annular groove 'for containing packing, and an undercut outer rim, a metallic strap engaging the depressed top of the cap, having spurs sprung over and engaging the rim of the cap, and inturned lugs to engage the threads on the neck; substantially as described.
3. In a jar closure the combination with a threaded jar neck and a cap having a depressed In testimony whereof I have hereunder central portion and an overhung rim, of a strap slgned my name in the presence of the two subcomprlsmg a sheet metal bar provided on each scribed wltnesses.
end with upwardly hooked spurs to engage WILLIAM B. FENN. 5 the cap and with a pair of lugs to engage the Witnesses:
threads on the jar neck, and adepressed center MINNIE A. LEONARD,
to engage the cap. F. B. KUNTZ.
