To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANGELINE SMELKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar Necks and Closures; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to jars and similar vessels that are employed for preserving fruits and the like, and it has reference particularly to the necks and closures thereof, the object of the invention being to simplify and cheapen the construction thereof, while improving the sealing devices therefor.

The invention consists in the novel forms of construction of the mouth of the neck and the lid and in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate like parts, Figure 1 is avertical central sectional view of the upper portion of a jar and the improved closure therefor; Fig. 2, a vertical central sectional view of the upper portion of the jar and neck; Fig. 3, an elevation of the lid for the jar; Fig. 4, a bottom plan of the retainingring, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of the lid.

in a practical embodiment of the invention the jar-body A may be of various forms and sizes, preferably composed of glass, the neck B usually being somewhat less in diameter than the body, as indicated in Fig. 1. At the top of the neck B an external horizontal flange O is formed, and the top of the neck and the top of the flange together form the sealingring seat I). A vertical annular flange-like mouth-wall E is formed upon the edge of the flange C, so as to extend about the seat I), and the wall E is provided with an external screwthread F.

The lid'H is provided at its underside with 5 an integral annular rib I, somewhat less in diameter than the greater or external diameter of the ring Or, so that the rib I may engage the ring Gr midway between the inner and outer edges thereof. Otherwise the bottom of the lid is flat. An annular rib J is formed integrally on the top of the lid for use in lifting the lid from the mouth of the jar, and it is of suflicient height to afford a finger-hold and somewhat less in diameter externally than the lid, also less in diameter than the rib I.

The diameter of the lid is slightly less than the internal diameter of the mouth-wall E.

The retaining-ring is of well-known form, comprising an annular top plate K and an in- 6 tegral flange K formed at the outer edge of the plate. the plate K having an annular rib L formed at the under side thereof and the flange K having a thread M formed so as to cooperate with the thread F. The diameter of the rib L is preferably the same as that of the rib I on the lid, and it is designed to engage the top of the lid between the edge thereof and the rib J. The extremity of the flange K of the retaining-ring is crimped, so as to form vertical ribs N, the metal of the flange being expanded, so that the extremity may pass freely over the thread F without engagement therewith.

If preferred, other means than the screwthreads may be employed for securing the retaining-ring to the jar-neck.

In practical use the sealing-ring G is to be placed upon the seat I). Then the lid is to be inserted in the mouth with the rib I resting 8 5 on the ring G.
